Pickle Bar- rel, celebrating its second anniversary, was rated number 364 among the top 500 eateries of all kinds in the country. AFTER 30 YEARS IN the meat business, Al Loewens- tein should know his beef. .. and it shows at Alfred's Restaurant in Troy's Som- erset Mall on Big Beaver.. . He goes to the Eastern Mar- ket twice a week to buy meat in the early morning hours...and nobody tries In put anything over on Al...they respect the fact that he very well knows the difference. Alfred's is a deceiving- looking place from the out- side...However, once within, there's a lot of intimate ele- gance packed into the three rooms seating 250 people...It does a big lunch busi- ness...and folks are fast beginning to discover that Alfred's also serves dinners until 10 p.m....even after the mall is closed. We were there for lunch and had two firsts...a delicious hamburger in a skillet served open face on thick brown bread...grilled onion and grilled tomato...plus a dish of kosher frozen yogurt, approved by the Rabbinical Council of Massachu- setts ... under its Orthodox supervision. We had the Frogurt (featured in Frostyogurt stands in malls around town) with various tastes of different toppings...rum rai- sin, wheat germ, peach melba, honey, strawberry, Dutch apple and a few more. In another booth, some diners were having the yummy Frogurt that tastes so much like ice cream...and without all those calories...on a malted Belgium waffle and those lip-smacking crepes served by Alfred's...People also New York Sirloin • ITALIAN DISHES —BEER & WINE- love Al's Papaya Yogurt Shake, made with yogurt and papaya juice. Frogurt tastes so much like ice cream that it's hard to believe anything can be so good with only 30 calories per ounce.
