The Best of Everything

IN THE NOVEMBER
1977 SATURDAY Evening
Post James Beard rated
Detroit as the third best eat-
ing-out city in the country,
after New York and San
Francisco.
The third edition of
"Meet, Eat & Enjoy
Greater Detroit" by Mary
Conway and Harry Satch-
well, is now on the stands in
most book stores and
department stores at $6.95..
. its authors claiming for
years that Detroit. rates
number one.
Their new restaurant
guide presents a convincing
argument, through its
descriptions of more than
500 places in southeastern
Michigan and nearby
Ontario, that Detroit's res-
taurants offer the best com-
binations available any-
where for eating-out
enjoyment and good values.
Actual menus from 145
top restaurants are repro-
duced (27 that have never
appeared in previous edi-
tions). . . full facts and
descriptions are given, so
that readers know exactly
what to expect before get-
ting there. . . More than 400
other places are described
in detail... ethnic spots, the
best places for hamburgers,
delicatessen, fish and chips,
pasta and pizza, bar-b-q, ice
cream, crepes and natural-
health foods. . . and then
some.
Mary and Harry provide
tips on eating (and drink-
ing) out. . . tell how to
approach testing an ethnic
spot that's new. .. suggest
special places for lunch or
brunch. .. tell what's open
on Sundays and holidays or
very early or very late in
the day.
There are special attrac-
tions in "Meet, Eat & Enjoy
Greater Detroit". . . Folks
reading this book will know
all about where to eat out-
doors, market areas and'
special neighborhoods,
parks and picnics, dancing
and entertainment, the art
museums, Greenfield Vil-
lage and Meadowbrook
Hall. .. and more... includ-
ing a restaurant gong show
for them to vote in.
If this isn't enough for
$6.95, there are feature arti- .
des to. . . Mary Conway's
week at a glamour fat farm.
. . the inside story on the
revival of downtown Detroit
and the Renaissance Center
- Detroit Plaza Complex. . .
plus a section on Chinese
food that takes all the mys-
tery out of Cantonese vs.
Mandarin vs. Szechwan,
etc. and tells how to get.the
most out of our area's rap-
idly improving Chinese
restaurants. _
AND THERE'S still
more... a sweet frosting on
this delicious book is the
Celebrity Recipe section. . .
Twenty-nine contributions
of favorite concoctions.
Add all new copy in a
beautiful new format, fasci-
nating cover photographs

and easy-to-use indexes and
you've got a valuable addi-
tion no household should be
without.
"Meet, Eat and Enjoy
Greater Detroit" is the book
with the photo of the "open"
trolley and the smiling faces
on the front cover.
Look for it. . . don't miss
it... by all means buy it!
TRAINING PROGRAM
has ended for Tunnel Bar-B-
Q on Northwestern and 12
Mile Rd.. . It's now ready
for folks both food and serv-
ice wise. . . (TBQ number
one is in Windsor, along
with TBQ's Other Place.)
IS IT DEFINITE that
Hugh Heffner is buying the
Elephant Restaurant and
Disco on Long Lake Rd. and
Livernois (also former
Banyan Tree & Sundown). .
. as the new Playboy Club?
PICKLE BARREL Deli,
owned by Sy Ginsberg and
Al Winkler, was recently
awarded a plaque by the
publishers of Restaurant
Hospitality, leading trade
publiciation . . . Pickle Bar-
rel, celebrating its second
anniversary, was rated
number 364 among the top
500 eateries of all kinds in
the country.
AFTER 30 YEARS IN the
meat business, Al Loewens-
tein should know his beef. ..
and it shows at Alfred's
Restaurant in Troy's Som-
erset Mall on Big Beaver.. .
He goes to the Eastern Mar-
ket twice a week to buy
meat in the early morning
hours...and nobody tries In
put anything over on
Al...they respect the fact
that he very well knows the
difference.
Alfred's is a deceiving-
looking place from the out-
side...However, once within,
there's a lot of intimate ele-
gance packed into the three
rooms seating 250 people...It
does a big lunch busi-
ness...and folks are fast
beginning to discover that
Alfred's also serves dinners
until 10 p.m....even after the
mall is closed.
We were there for lunch
and had two firsts...a
delicious hamburger in a
skillet served open face on
thick brown bread...grilled
onion and grilled
tomato...plus a dish of
kosher frozen yogurt,
approved by the Rabbinical
Council of Massachu-
setts ... under its Orthodox
supervision.
We had the Frogurt
(featured in Frostyogurt
stands in malls around
town) with various tastes of
different toppings...rum rai-
sin, wheat germ, peach
melba, honey, strawberry,
Dutch apple and a few
more.
In another booth, some
diners were having the
yummy Frogurt that tastes
so much like ice
cream...and without all
those calories...on a malted
Belgium waffle and those
lip-smacking crepes served
by Alfred's...People also

Frogurt tastes so much

to believe anything can be
so good with only 30 calories
per ounce.
Fashion shows are every-
day at Alfred's...The one we
saw was with lovely lassies
