Young Israel Helps Jewish
Jail Prisoners Retain Judaism

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.)

Ten Jewish inmates of the
Allenwood federal prison in
Pennsylvania took part dur-
ing September in a religious
retreat program in New
York City under sponsorship
of and in custody of the
National Council of Young
Israel, an organization of
Orthodox synagogues.
Herman Rosenbaum,
Young Israel president, said
the retreat was the only
such program available to
the Allenwood Jewish con-
victs and that it was held in
the form of a peer training
project from Sept. II
through Sept. 23.
He explained the goal of
the peer training program is
to provide the Jewish con-
victs with a solid back-
ground, both for their own
benefit and to enable them
to provide leadership for the
recently-organized Allen-
wood Jewish Congregation,
a formal orgariazation rec-
ognized by Allenwood prison
authorities.

In another phase of Young
Israel help to Jewish
inmates in meeting their
religious needs, the move-
ment has provided pray-
erbooks and prayer shawls
for those among. the aver-
age 65 Jewish inmates in
Allenwood who want them,
the spokesman said.

Young Israel also spon-
sors three-day religious
retreats for the inmates in
which groups of 14 prisoners
are regularly invited by
Rabbi Mordechai Fine,
rabbi of the Young Israel of
Scranton, to come as guests
of that Young Israel branch.
The inmates usually stay at
a local motel.
The initiative in forming
the congregation came from
Rabbi Meir Kahane, Jewish
Defense League founder,
during his brief
incarceration at the Allen-
wood prison.

One of the goals of the

training program is to
enable the inmates to talk--
more effectively on Jewish
issues to fellow inmates and
to offset the evangelizing
effects of the Christian min-
istry representatives,
Young Israel officials said.
In May 1976, a kosher
kitchen was set up at the
prison. Inmates cook and
serve kosher food to the 45 _
inmates who want it. Food-,
raw materials are provided
by the Bureau of Prisons.
