ENJOY THESE TASTY
JEWISH TREASURES!
Approximately 100 men
and women gathered at
Young Israel of Greenfield
Wednesday evening to hear
Rabbi Aaron Soloveichik,
president and rosh yeshiva
of the Brisk Rabbinial Col-
lege (Yeshivas Brisk) of
Chicago. The evening was
sponsored by the Detroit
Friends of Yeshivas Brisk.
Rabbi Joshua Sperka hos-
ted the event, and in his
opening remarks, he spoke
of the importance Brisk
(Brest-Litovsk) had as a
center of Torah learning in
eastern Europe. The contin-
uation of that tradition,
Sperka said, has been kept
alive in the United States
with the re-establishement
of the Brisker Yeshiva in
Chicago.
Introducing the speaker
was Rabbi Leizer Levin,
president of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis of Detroit
Speaking in Yiddish, Rabbi
Levin said the measure of
Jews is their appreciation of
scholarship, which is evi-
denced by the attention and
respect accorded renowned
men of learning when they
come to visit.
Rabbi Soloveichik cen-
tered his address on the
weekly Torah portion, and
used the- example of Jacob,
to point that just as the
patriarch maintained his
devotion to God while estab-
lishing his home, sb too a
land developed through
physical building alone can-
not be considered a true
domicile unless spiritual
upbuilding is also present.
Soloveichik quoted Rabbi
Tlayim Volozhiner, who said
in 1810 that the advent of the
Messiah could not be
expected until a Torah cen-
ter is established in every
important city in the world
where Jews are found, and
the last stop would be

America. If Jews will join
their present energies and
talents to their accom-
plishments of the past,
Rabbi Soloveichik said, the
house of Israel can build a
glorious future.
Following the rabbi's
address, Rabbi Samuel
Prero of Young Israel said
that two of his sons have
studied under Rabbi Solovi-
chik toward their rabbinic
ordination. He then
announced a contribution to
Yeshivas Brisk on behalf of
his family and in-laws. Sev-
eral other donations to the
yeshiva were then made by
many of those present.
