Intellectuals to Discuss M.E.?

Newsweek magazine says
former West German Chan-
cellor Willy Brandt is trying
to set up his own Mideast
peace conference: an inter-
national gathering in Vienna
next January of Jewish and
Arab intellectuals, including
some Israelis and some
PLO-connected Arabs.
The aim is to see if the
assembled scholars,
authors, scientists and polit-
ical figures, meeting in a
nonpolitical atmosphere,
can suggest ways of reduc-
ing the friction between
Jews and Arabs in the
Mideast.
Among those invited:
Henry Kissinger, former
French Premier Pierre

Rabbi Wolfe Kelman L
executive vice president of
the Rabbinical Assembly,
addressing the biennial con-
vention of the United Syna-

RAMAT-GAN—Bar-Ilan,
Israel's only religious-orien-
ted university, graduated a
record number of students
this past year, a total of
1,100, and in .November
expected to equal its record
registration of some 7,900
students last year.
This represents a doubling

gregational arm of the
Conservative movement in
the United States and Can-
ada, pointed to the con-
stantly increasing demand
for Conservative rabbis,
educators, and other syna-
gogue personnel, with sup-

the creation and growth of
an educational movement,
and the establishment of
numerous new synagogues,
particulary in the suburbs.
The convention marked
the 75th anniversary of the
arrival in America of Prof.
Solomon Schechter, the
founder of the Conservative
movement and of the United
Synagogue.

Fellowships will be
directed towards- the Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary's Kollel program.
The research institute helps
fill the need for talmudic
scholar-teachers.
A portion of the funding
will also be directed
towards Rabbi Isaac Elcha-
nan Theological Seminary's
"Realidad" effort in Mexico
and other Latin American
countries. The program,
begun this year, reached
groups of Mexican youths
during the summer at a site
outside of Mexico City.

A team of youth leaders
and advisers from Yeshiva
University and Rabbi Isaac
Elchanan Theological Semi-
- nary conducted seminare
and study programs
designed to foster knowl-
edge of teh religious, ethical
and historical implications
of Judaism for today's Jew-
ish youngster. Similar
efforts during the past sum-
mer were also held in Aus-
tralia, South Africa. Canada
and the U.S.
