New Jersey. Holds
Pro-Israel Rally

WAYNE, N.J. (JTA)—An
outpouring of support for
Israel and her people was
loudly and dramatically
expressed by some 1,000
people who attended a
"Rally for Israel" spon-
sored by the Jewish Feder-
ation of North Jersey Oct.
30.
Jews and non-Jews joined
together to indicate to com-
munity leaders and the Car-
ter Administration their dis-
pleasure with recent
changes in U.S. policy on
the Middle East.
The spirit of the afternoon
was summed up by the two
main speakers, Hayim
Landau, former Israeli min-
ister of development; and
Sister Rose Thering, of
Seton Hall University.
Landau told the group,
"We are in the midst of a
confrontation with the
American Administration,"
citing the recent U.S.-USSR
joint statement as a viola-
tion of the United States
pledge made in 1973 to take
no actions unless it first
'consulted with Israel.
Sister Rose was equally
emphatic as she asserted:
"As a Christian and Catho-
lic, I loudly, clearly and
publicly must protest the
recent action of the Admin-
istration in issuing its joint
statement with the Soviets
as well as recent UN
actions... we must protest
any invitation to the PLO to
the Geneva conference." -

U.S. Investors
Helping Israel
Through Ampal

NEW YORK—Ampal-
American Israel Corp. has
its operations firmly planted
in both the United States
and Israel. It raises money
in the U.S. (as well as Can-
ada) and invests it in Israeli
businesses, concentrating
on those industries that can
export their products and
produce badly needed hard
currency—or those that can
produce items now being
imported.
The company was founded
in 1941 to channel American
investment capital into
enterprises in the Holy
Land. Since its inception it
has made investments and
loans totalling nearly $1 bil-
lion and it now numbers
40,000 Americans and Cana-
dians among the holders of
its shares and debentures.
According to Ralph
Cohen, president of Ampal,
"Most of our investments
are in gilt-edged basic
industries such as metals,
shipping, chemicals, elec-
tronics, cement_
oil mar-
keting. We've never
ever had a
default and we've never
missed a dividend."
All of Ampal's financings
are in U.S. dollars and are
repayable in dollars, so
they're not affected by fluc-
tuations in the value of the
Israeli pound.
