Jewish Woman Pilot Undaunted by Pregnancy, Earns License

Susan Siporin didn't have
enough to worry about,
pregnant with her third
child and working as a sub-
stitute occupational thera-
pist, so she took up flying.
NoW the owner of a pri-
vate pilot's license, Mrs.
Siporin got the notion to
take up flying three years
ago, but didn't start taking
lessons until this past April
when she enrolled in a 10-
week ground . school adult
education course in Farm-
ington. From the ground
school she went to Pontiac
for flight instruction and by
May she was in the air.

In July she made her first
solo flight and was sub-
jected to an unusual cere-
mony: when new flyers
make their first solo flight,
the back of their shirt is cut
off and the date of the event
is written on it and kept as a
memento.
To earn the pilot's license,
she had to fly 20 hours with
a flight instructor and clock
20 hours of solo time, 10 of
those hours being used for
"cross country" trips,
flights to airports a min-
imum of 25 miles away. A
longer trip comprised of
three stops, each at least

100 miles apart also is
included among the license
requirements. On her long
flight, Mrs. Siporin went to
13Iuffton, Ohio, Kalamazoo
and Pontiac, her starting
point. A written exam also
was required.
The pregnancy did not
hamper her desire to earn
her license, but the weather
and search for babysitters
became a problem.
"I tried 13 times during
three weeks to make my
long flight, and each time I
was rained out When she
took her flight test, the
examiner remarked that

Mrs. Siporin is one of about
150 women pilots in the
state.
Asked if her husband,
Sandy, and children have
flown with her she said her
daughter has and "loves it."
Her husband's busy sched-
ule has prevented him from
flying with her.
Mrs. Siporin is not the
first in her family to take an
interest in flying. Her
father, Jacob Feldman, had
flown during World War H
and she remembers there
were always model air-
planes in the house. Her
father owns two planes. Her
mother, Pearl, also is tak-
ing flying lessons.

NEW YORK—The biblical
period from Abraham and
Sarah to Joseph and his
brothers is portrayed in a
new sound filmstrip pro-
duced by the Board of Jew-
ish Education of Greater
New York, titled "4,000
Years Ago and We Were
There - The Patriarchs."
The filmstrip, accom-
panied by a narration on
cassette, consists of color
photographs of selected
scenes from the 32nd annual
Children's Art Exhibit of
BJE. Using clay, paint,
yarn, fabrics, and a wealth
of creativity, hundreds of
children gave imaginative
form to episodes from the
Bible.
Each filmstrip comes
with a "mini-guide." Indi-
