Panush at its next meeting
8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the
Oak Park Community
Center.
Dr. Panush, assistant
dean of continuing educa-
tion at Macomb County
Community College, will
speak on "The American
Jewish Community—Its
Past and Its Future." The
'public is invited.

By PHILLIP APPLEBAUM
About 300 young people
attended a special showing
of the film documentary,
`Chagall: The Colours of
Love," 8 p.m. last Saturday
at the main branch of the
Jewish Community Center,
sponsored by the Junior
Division of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation.
The film, narrated by
actor James Mason, was
produced by Canadian film-
maker Harry Rasky, who
devoted two years of film-
ing in the museums of half a
dozen countries, to capture
the essence of Marc Cha-
gall's life and work through
his paintings, stained glass,
tapestries and mosaics.
Chagall, who marked his
90th birthday last July, was
interviewed in the garden of
his home at St. Paul de
Vence in the south of
France, with the artist's
wife serving occasionally as
translator.

A biographical study, the
film followed Chagall's life
from his beginnings in the
White Russian village of
'Vitebsk, to his arrival in
Paris in 1910, his return to
Russia and his marriage
there, his travel to Moscow
after the Revolution to
become commissar of arts
where he worked with the
Yiddish theater, and his
return to Paris in 1923, all
expressed through the fruits
of his imaginative power,
bis art. (One mystery the
film failed to clarify is the
question of Chagall's name,
which was originally Segal.)
Chagall's love of the Bible
was especially emphasized,
and extensive footage of his
many works on Biblical
themes illustrated this
aspect of his creative
career. Chagall, in_the film,
calls the Bible his religion,
and his art his expression of
that religion and devotion to
Judaism, although some of
his art employs a disturbing
usage of the Crucifixion.
Chagall also remarked that
he loves Israel, because "it
is the land of the Bible."
The film also showed Cha-
gall's impressive stained
glass windows on Biblical
themes in the Hadassah
Medical Center in
Jerusalem.
The film's score, by
Toronto composer Lou
Applebaum, was the music
of Mozart, which like Cha-
gall's art is colorful, light,
so disarmingly enchanting,
so seemingly simple, that
one can fail to recognize the
genius which created it.
Cliagall himself remarked
that he regards Mozart,
next to Moses as one of the
greatest "menin history.
