Statistics are quoted that most men and women over 65 are healthy enough to carry on normal activities; 15 percent are not; 5 per- cent are in homes for aged or nursing homes. The aging process can be a pleasure and comfort and a time for looking back and looking ahead, say the authors. Many illnesses are curable, though this time of life is a "high risk period" because of the cellular and tissue changes that are tak- ing place. Interwoven with emo- tional, social, and financial problems, this stage requires concern, com- passion, and constructive support. The American Society's older generation in most cases depends on expert care and agencies, while other countries may care for those that cared for them. If one has a good atti, tude about aging and can communicate. it is possible to have an open and accepted relationship between children and elderly parents. There is an interesting chapter directed to children as to when to say "yes" and when to say "no". The details involved point up to "unreasonable demands," unnecessary burdens to an entire family life, when demands will make the elderly grow old pre- maturely and what to eval- uate in making the aging process a constructive, sup- portive aid to the parent. (This may sound -like the reversal role of parent- child). Yes, aging parents are sometimes to be told that "the idea will not work, let's figure another way." A "no" may be a blessing to . both parent and child, and a preparation for the day when your parents cannot live independently. Think ahead with preventive care. Talk about it to each other. Young and old have dis- abilities, and the authors suggest: "Feel lucky you're holding up with your dis- ability and...believe it too." Root yourself in the commu- nity and plan earlier in life for retirement, keeping a Support Applauded 0 good attitude about age and death. Changes must take place. Environment and role changes are sometimes nec- essary. Work towards car- ing for the elderly in our society, supplying public transportation, eliminate high steps on buses, easy stairs, marketing facilities, housing, apartments, hand rails in bathrooms, safe kitchen appliances. "There's hardly a product on TV for elderly, except Geritol, and even that appeals to a younger, more affluent buying public." "You and Your Aging Parent" can serve as an inspiration for a good senior citizens program, which will give self-esteem and worth- whileness to our society. TELAVIV (JTA)—For- eign Minister Moshe Dayan said that the support of U.S. Jewry was one of the four factors that will enable Israel to maneuver and negotiate at the Geneva conference. The other factors were that Israel is in possession of the occupied territories and can continue to hold them; the possibility of co- existence with the Arabs; and the strength of the Israeli army.
