OBITUARIES

Beth El Rabbinate Pays
Tribute to Andrew Chalat

For the first time in
Temple Beth El's records,
the three rabbis joined in
paying tribute to_ a star
pupil in the temple's reli-
gious school, Andrew Ross
Chalat, at a funeral service
held at Ira Kaufman Chapel
Sunday afternoon.
Rabbis Richard Hertz,
, Dannel Schwartz and Jef-
ey Lazar jointly paid
-r-ionor to a remarkable
young man of 15 whose sud-
den death occurred last
/Friday in his schoolroom at
the Liggett School.

He felt ill at noon and col-
lapsed. An autopsy showed
a massive heart attach.

Andrew Chalat was an
outstanding pupil at Temple
Beth El and Liggett. He was
active in all school affairs in
both, was a leader in the
Boy Scouts and was deeply
devoted to Israel. His trip
two years ago, on his Bar
Mitzva with grandfather
Myron Steinberg, parents
and the rest of the family
aroused his deep interest in
Israel.

Fellow students at Beth
El and Liggett were pall
bearers and honorary pall
bearers and the entire Kauf-
man Chapel was filled to
overflowing with many
being the deceased's fellow
students.

Andrew Chalat, who
resided at 677 Middlesex,
Grosse Pointe Park, leaves
his parents, Dr. and Mrs.
Ned (Joann) Chalat; a
brother, James; a sister,
