Mrs. Fields is one of the founders of the Michigan Region, American Red Magen David for Israel, serves on the executive board and has played a sig- nificant role in_the activities of the local chapter since its inception. A one-time columnist for the Detroit Times, in 1947 she was on the editorial _staff of the Legal Chronicle (associated with the Jewish Chronicle) and in her pub- licity releases strongly appealed' for support for Materials-for Palestine. In 1948 she left the Legal Chronicle to launch and coordinate the Bnai Brith Friendship Trains cam- paign; she was appointed Detroit director and shortly afterwards became Midwest director, of Materials for Israel. An estimated $10 million in supplies were raised by Detroit sympa- thizers during the period which ended in 1951. Louis Berry, Dr. Lawrence Yaffa, Philip Slomovitz, Harry Weinsaft, Harry Cohen and Ben Weiss were among the dedicated and generous supporters. Mrs. Fields recalls send- ing the first ambulance from Detroit. "We had by that time mobilized large segments of the Jewish pop- Schoolfield - ulation throughout the Mid- west and found many sym- phatizers among friends," she recalls. The organiza- tion also helped recruit more than 500 American and Canadian pilots and navigators who made up more than half of Israel's air force. Upon termination of the Materials for Israel cam- paign Sally Fields became Midwest director for El Al Israel Air Lines, and opened the Detroit office. She is a life member of Jewish National Fund and Bnai Brith, past president of the Louis Marshall Chapter, founder and first president of. Kadimah Club and helped to organize the City of Hope Cancer Fighters and for nine years was a member of the Men's Club of City of Hope (now life member of City of Hbpe). Upon the recommendation of_ the late Sen. Hart, Mrs. Fields was elected to the board of the American Secu- rity Council; she serves on the boards of the Detroit Philosophical Society, Detroit Women's Traffic Club, and Women's Division of the Detroit Round Table of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. She is a member of the Motion Pictures, Council Shaarit Haplaytah Survi- vors of the Holocaust and Sinai Hospital Guild. With the late Osias Zwerciling she organized the first synagogue and the Hillel Foundation for Jewish students at the University of Michigan.
