Former Detroiter Zev
(William) Chafets is the
senior press officer for the
Israeli government, but he
doesn't consider himself
political.
According to feature arti-
cles in major Hebrew news-
papers in Israel, Chafets
considers himself apolitical.
"I have no political image
and I have no political
ambitions. 'My assignment
is governmental and not
political."
A native of Pontiac, Cha-
- fets lives in Israel with his
daughter Michal. He was
raised in Pontiac where he
attended Pontiac High
School. It was at the Univer-

behalf of the foreign office.
Since 1972, Chafets has
been a lecturer on problems
in the Middle East and on
Zionism for the Jewish
Agency. He was invited to
lecture on history at Tel
Aviv University for the cur-
rent academic year.
Chafets emphasizes that
he serves in the government
"as a professional and not
as a politician or party
worker." When word of his
position as co-ordinator of
information for the cam-
paign staff of Likud created
a possible link to the politi-
cal party, Chafets said, "I
have never been a politi-
cian, except perhaps during
the period in the U.S. when
I was national president of
Reform Jewish youth and
then served on the board of
trustees of the Reform
movement." -
Evaluating his job as sen-
ior press officer, Chafets
says he must present
reliable information and use
maximum speed in sup-
plying the news.
"It is important that we
create a feeling of trust
among the foreign. and
Israeli journalists that we
will supply information
reliably, promptly and
accurately.
"I hope that such was the
case in the past, and if nec-
essary, we shall improve
and try to do even better."
He states his credo as fol-
lows: "To serve the journal-
ists and to give them what
they need, and not what the
government needs, taking
into account the interests of
the state."
