Cyrus Vance and 80 Ameri-
can Jewish communal lead-

ers was "off the record"
and strongly implied that
the Jewish spokesman,
Rabbi Alexander Schindler,
chairman of the Conference
of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organiza-
tions, should not have talked
with reporters about it
afterwards.
The issue raised at a State
Department briefing by
spokesman John Trattner
opened a flurry of questions
about why the department
called the meetings with
American Jewish leaders
and journalists. It also
brought into focus the
widely held perception that
the U.S. government is
in a campaign to
weaken the Jewish commu-
nity's support for Israel and
gain a more favorable Jew-
ish outlook toward the
Administration's Middle
Fast policies.
Trattner said the meeting
with Jewish leaderg was "a
dialogue," the purpose of
which was to "inform" Jew-
ish communal leaders of
U.S. politics and obtain the
leaders' views."
In London, Israel Minister
at Housing Gideon Patt said
the-Carter Administration is
trying to split the American
Jewish community and
weaken its support for
Israel. -
Pat said Carter's purpose
in holding talks with small
groups of American Jews

was to prevent a repetition
of the community's recent
spontaneous hostile reac-
tions to the joint Soviet-
American statement on the
Geneva conference.
