The issue raised at a State Department briefing by spokesman John Trattner opened a flurry of questions about why the department called the meetings with American Jewish leaders and journalists. It also brought into focus the widely held perception that the U.S. government is in a campaign to weaken the Jewish commu- nity's support for Israel and gain a more favorable Jew- ish outlook toward the Administration's Middle Fast policies. Trattner said the meeting with Jewish leaderg was "a dialogue," the purpose of which was to "inform" Jew- ish communal leaders of U.S. politics and obtain the leaders' views."
