About 29,500 marraiges were performed last year compared to 32.300 the year before, a decline of nine Synagogue percent. But divorces were up more than nine percent in the same period and the few-weddings-more- divorces trend is expected to continue this year. Married couples are also having fewer children. As soon as his health was sufficiently restored, Wie- senthal began gathering and preparing evidence of Nazi atrocities for the War Crimes Section of the U.S. Army. In 1954, the office in Linz, Austria was closed and its files given to the Yad Vashem archives in Israel, except for one — the dossier on Adolf Eichmann, chief of the Gestapo's Jewish department, who had super- vised the implementation of the "final solution." Encouraged by his suc- cess in the Eichmann case, Wiesenthal re-opened the Jewish Documentation Cen- ter, this time in Vienna, and concentrated exclusively on hunting war criminals. Wiesenthal's book of memories "The Murderers Among Us," was published in 1967. In 1973 his "Sails of Hope" was published.
