occasion for acclaim by an
entire community.
In fact, it has emerged as
a triumph seldom matched
in American Jewish literary
experience.
It is the publication of the
works of and tributes to the
late Bernard Isaacs.
The great task, under-
taken by the admirers and
friends of the late Detroit
educator will be occasion,
next Thursday evening, at a
special function at Cong.
Beth Achim, of acclaim and
celebration as "Sefer B.
Isaacs" will be presented,
upon its appearance, to the
members of the sponsoring
committee who had spon-
sored the gathering of the
material for this noteworthy
book and its printing.
The function for the
book's publication already
is assured the impressive-
ness of the book itself. The
editor, Morris Nobel, will
have the privilege of shar-
ing evaluations of the
accomplished task with
Rabbi Max Weine, the
author of the book's bio-
graphical sketch of Bernard
Isaacs, as well as of sharing,
in gathering the material.
Max Chomsky, one of the
prominent graduates of the
United Hebrew Schools in
the era of Mr. Isaacs' super-
intendentship, who also was
a pupil of the late educator,
will be the chairman of the
function which will have a
communal significance,
with an Isaacs following in
attendance.

BERNARD ISSAACS

historic occurrence in liter-
ary ranks in the United
States.
The book contains
Hebrew, English and Yidd-
ish stories and essays by
and about the eminent
scholar.
It is as an ingathering of
Hebrew stories by Mr.
Isaacs that had never
before been printed that
"Sefer B. Isaacs" has a spe-
cial attraction for his read-
ers in this country and in
Israel. The educator's son,
Ruben Isaacs, not only
supervised the art work, the
attractive cover, the selec-
tion of the eight pages of
photographs. He was helpful
in assembling the material
that had awaited publication
during Mr. Isaacs' lifetime.
There is a fascination in
this book that has many
merits.
The Hebrew section
understandably carried with
it the chief influence upon
the book's sponsors. The
English translations by
Judith Stern follow a trend
that was in effect during
Mr. Isaacs' lifetime. She
personally rendered his sto-
ries of life among Jews for
the English readers.
The Yiddish sections have
additional interest.
The late Dr. Moses Gold-
oftas had translated notable
writings by Bernard Isaacs
into the Yiddish. This por-
tion, together with other
essays included in the book
make the Yiddish readings
unique and impressive.
One of the closest friends
and admirers, as well as co-
workers, of Bernard Isaacs,
wrote the tribute in Yiddish
— about the man, the
scholar, the friend he had
respected and loved during
an active. lifetime. Wolf Sny-
der, himself a scholar of
note, a former principal of
the local Yiddish schools,
wrote about Isaacs the
great human being. This
essay definitely is among
the very scholarly and hu-
man documents in a book
replete with admiration for
a noted educator and
author.
Gaining special consid-
eration for a labor of love as
a participant in the pub-
lication of this book is the
extensive biographical
essay by Rabbi Max Weine.
It is biographical literature
• Ekt ittss.4?-§t! and

of a former pupil for his
teacher is expressed in
every approach to the inter-
ests and devotions of the
man honored by this book.
It is an established fact,
as all who have known Mr.
Isaacs will attest, that his
fame was not limited +-
Michigan or to the Unit,
States. Mr. Isaacs was reau
with avidity in Israel and by
many in this country, in all
the languages represented
in this volume.
Thus, among the tributes
to the author contained in
this book are two essays
that merit special attention
—the regards expressed for
the late educator by Dr.
Ephraim Shmueli, who was
a member of the staff of the
United Hebrew Schools of
Detroit when Mr. Isaacs
was its superintendent and
who is now a member of the
faculty of Haifa University
in Israel; and Dr. Zevulun
Ravid of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary of
America.
And even more touching
is a tribute by a younger
brother, David Isaacs, who
also had a role of impor-
tance as an educator and
whose love for elder brother
was always a mark of dig-
nity and appreciation in the
Isaacs family.
For Detroit Jewry there
also is an historic aspect to
the book. Mr. Isaacs also is
represented in the volume
with "A Diary" and it is in
this essay that he writes
about the Detroit notables
— the Butzels, the Wine-
mans, the many others who
are importantly in the cast
of characters of the builders
of Greater Detroit Jewry.
Thus we have here, in
"Sefer B. Isaacs," a corn-
bination if history and inter-
pretive writing, fiction and
brilliant narrative writing,
appreciation of a-noted per-
sonality's talents.
