LONDON—Rabbi Solo-
mon Benhamu, newly
appointed chief rabbi of
Argentina, recently visited
the Sunderland Yeshiva in
England, where he received
his training as a boy.
Born in Tetuan, Morocco,
Rabbi Benhamu came to
Sunderland as a pupil at the
yeshiva in 1951, leaving in
1957 to continue his studies
in Israel, where he qualified
as a dayan (religious court
judge).
A few years ago he was
appointed dayan to the Jew-
ish community of Buenos
Aires, and has now been ele-
vated to the post of the
country's chief rabbi.
