According to Raymond

exhibition includes a joint
photograph of Tucker and
Levine.
"I only conducted him in
Verdi's 'Luisa Miller' and
Puccini's `Tosca' at the
Met," Levine said. "But at
the time of his death, we
were planning for him to go

lived three months longer,
we would have had tapes.
"I remember once that
within a week and a half, he
sang in Mozart's 'Cosi fan
tutte,"Boccanegra' and
Verdi's 'Aida,' operas that
encompass different types
of tenors and different
styles and techniques. He
sang all three better than
anyone- else at the time
could do them. Very few
tenors have ever had that
kind of range."
During his extraordinarily
long tenure at the Met — 30
years — Tucker sang 30
roles, from Enzo in Pow
chielli's "La Gioconda" at
his debut in 1945, to Samson
in Saint-Saens's "Samson et
Dalila," which he first tack-
led in 1971.
