HOLLYWOOD— "The
Boys from Brazil," Ira
Levin's revealing novel
about World War II German
scientists who have escaped
to South America to plot the
return of the Nazi Party to
world power by the arti-
ficial reproduction of super-
men, is being prepared for
the screen by the Producers
Circle Co. in Hollywood,
headed by Robert Fryer
who was also responsible
for "The Voyage of the
Damned." The picture is
being financed and pre-
sented by Britain's Lord
Lew Grade.
For a switch of character
Gregory Peck this time por-
trays the villain, the real-
life character of the
infamous concentration
camp doctor Joseph Men-
gele, while Sir Laurence
Olivier (a former war crim-
inal in "Marathon Man")
turns to become Nazi hunter
Simon Wiesenthal (with the
name fictionized as
Liebermann).
Though Mengele actually
is hiding out in Paraguay,
the scenes involving the
butcher of Auschwitz will be
duplicated in Portugal

"Papillon") directing.
Other locations within the
15-week shooting schedule
include Vienna (the domi-
cile of Wiesenthal-Liber-
mann), Munich, Paris and
London. The interiors will
be photographed in the Brit-
ish studios.
Roman Polanski will
undergo the three months of
psychiatric treatment
ordered by the bench
before—not after—directing
the motion picture "Hurri-
cane," as has been erro-
neously reported in the
daily press. The Dino de
Laurentis organization, pro-
ducers of the new, stream-
lined "Hurricane," tell us
that the screenplay by
Lorenzo Semple, Jr. (who
also did "King Kong") has
not even been completed
and no cast is set except
Jessica Lange, the girl kid-
napped by the gorilla in
"King Kong."
The love story set against
violent storms in the South
Seas has been updated to fit
today's taste. Negotiations
are in progress for Charles
Bronson to play the male
lead. Shooting is scheduled
to commence in Bora Bora,
Feb. 1, 1978.
Neil Simon, today is the
busiest playwright-
screenwriter on both coasts,
with "Chapter Two," his
latest play, opening recently
at the Ahmanson Theater in
Los Angeles and simultane-
ously being developed into a
motion picture at Columbia
Studios, with Herbert Ross
directing both the stage and
screen version. "Chapter

Another project, jointly to
be tackled by producer Ray
Stark (son-in-law of Fanny
Brice) and Herbert Ross, is
the filmization of Simon's
earlier play "California
Suite" (also for Columbia )
with Walter Matthau and
British actress Maggie
Smith in the two leads.
Joseph E. Levine, the
youthful 70-year-old pro-
ducer, has signed Anthony
Hopkins, Ann-Margret and
Burgess Meredith to co-star
in "Magic," screen version
of William Goldman's
metaphysical novel, to be
directed by Richard
Attenborough from a
screenplay by the author.
After "A Bridge Too Far,"
it is the second collabora-
tion between producer
Levine, novelist Goldman
and director Attenborough.
"Magic" goes before the
cameras in Hollywood
January.
Walter Mirisch is pre-
paring filmization of the
Broadway play, "Same
Ilme, Next Year." Screen
version has been written by
the play's author Bernard
Slade, with Robert Mulligan
directing the two characters
portrayed by Ellen Burstyn
and Alan Alda. The picture
commences photography in
January.
