The
first
incident
occurred a day after the
physicist urged the Bel-
grade conference to take a
strong stand on human
rights.
In a related development,
Lev Ovsishcher, a retired
Jewish army 'colonel,
returned his medals to the
Kremlin in protest of not
being allowed to emigrate.

In Washington, it was
learned that _72 Jews in
seven Russian cities held a
three-day hunger strike last
week in protest of being
refused exit visas.

Meanwhile, the National
Conference on Soviet Jewry
has learned that Leonid Sle-
pak has refused induction
into the Soviet army,
thereby risking a prison
sentence. At the same time,
it was learned that Leonid's
older brother, Aleksander,
has received permission to
emigrate to Israel.
In refusing induction,
Leonid said that he had filed
a written protest to the
Soviet ' Defense Minister
saying that he is in actuality
an Israeli citizen and con-
siders Israel his homeland.

Sarah Bernhardt was
queen in the eyes of mil-

life, public and private, was
the stuff of both high drama
and street corner gossip.
Her world, as portrayed by
Joanna Richardson, was a
tragicomedy produced,
directred, and played by the
"Divine Sarah."
