Meanwhile, Carter's Middle East policy has come under severe attack from the Democratic Party's Senate Whip while a leading Republican Senator warned that "there could be a crunch, a cooling in U.S.- Israeli relations relative to the Geneva Conference." Sen. Alan Cranston (D- Calif.) his party's second ranking member in the Sen- ate declared in a speech it would be "changing the - * * * PLO Agent Given Unrestricted Visa WASHINGTON (JTA)— The U.S. government, with- out public notice, has for the first time provided an offi- cial of the Palestine Liber- ation Organization, Mah- moud Salem Darwish, with a visa to enter this country with freedom to go and do as he pleases. Up to now, PLO members have been restricted to New York and for United Nations business only. Issuance of the visa became known when it appeared without attribu- tion in the Washington Star. Sources said Darwish appeared in Detroit last weekend at the convention of Arab American Univer- sity Graduates. * * * White House Opens Doors to Jewish Editors and Leaders WASHINGTON (JTA)— Doors are opening wider and more often at the White House and the State Depart- ment these days for Jews concerned over the Carter Administration's course in the Middle East. They meet Administration officials eager to persuade them that the President's com- mitments to Israel "remain unchanged:" Ostomy surgery no ban to a full social life The person who has had a colostomy or other ostomy operation can—and should--expect a normal business, family, and social life. He said that "no such development should be expected from a reconvened Middle East Peace Confer- ence in Geneva. A PLO- dominated Palestinian state on Israel's border would be a loaded gun aimed at Israel's head at point-blank range," he said. Cranston had been strongly supportive of the Carter policy until the Soviet-American statement was disclosed. Meanwhile, Sen. Jacob K. Javits (R - NY) pointed out that "while Israel can count on full U.S. support respect- ing its national security it cannot count on the full sup- port of the U.S. at the Middle 'East negotiating tables under policies adopted by the Carter Administration." So far, Jordan is the only Arab - country to officially respond to the U.S.-Israel working paper on reconven- ing the Geneva talks. The U.S. State Department would not disclose the response. Discussions are contin- uing with Egypt and Syria on the paper. According to reports from Cairo, Egyp- tian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy said Egyp- tian President Anwar Sadat had requested President Carter to amend the paper to include the PLO as a par- Clawson, Mi. 48017 585-0555 Ask about our Medicare program Ten top officials of the American Jewish Com- mittee conferred for 90 min- utes at the White House last week where Vice President Walter Mondale was pre- sent for most of the time. A few days before, President Carter himself casually entered a discussion Robert Lipshutz his counsel and a confidant, was having with six Jews. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance met Wednesday with the Conference of Presi- dents of Major American Jewish Organizations headed by Rabbi Alexander Schindler. The 70 Jewish leaders pre- sent were described as frus- trated and angry. One said the Administration, if noth- ing else, was unifying the Jewish community. Martin Citrin, president of the Jewish Welfare Feder- ation of Metropolitan Detroit, attended Wednes- day's meeting. Vance was also scheduled to meet with a number of Jewish editors at 11 a.m. today at the State Department. Fahmy said that this was Egypt's view fol- lowing agreement with PLO chairman Yasir Arafat. A similar view was pre- sented by Saudia Arabia's foreign minister in talks with President Carter this week. Israeli officials do not expect the Arabs to approve the paper without change. But they believe that with American encouragement, the Arabs, could be brought to accept the working paper's principles and that subsequent haggling over verbal formulations could lead to the resumption of the-Geneva talks. The paper, in its present form, represents Israel's basic position for going to Geneva: no participation by the PLO; - no negotiations over a Palestinian state; and no automatic with- drawal by Israel to its 1967 borders. If these principles remain unaltered, Israel is prepared to consider pro- posals for changes and amendments to the working paper, officials say. Government sources acknowledged that there has been an exchange of correspondence in recent days between President Carter and Menachem Begin. They insisted that the correspondence con- tained re-affirmations of the U.S. commitment to Israel and did not demand that Israel agree to changes in the working paper.
