Jacob Jacobs Dies at 86,
r Proponent of Yiddish Theater

NEW YORK (JTA )—
Jacob Jacobs, a major fig-
ure in the Yiddish theater,
died Oct. 14 at age 86.
He acted in and produced
hundreds of musicals and
wrote lyrics for countless
songs. His biggest hit song,
"Bei Mir Bist du Schoen,"
which he wrote with Sholom
Secunda . in 1931, became
world famous.
A master showman who
sought to entertain through
al Yiddish musicals
omedies, Mr. Jacobs
also brought to the Yiddish
theater plays originally
written in English, including
"Detective Story," "Johnny
Belinda," and "Anna
Lucasta." During the 1920s
and 1930s he owned a string
of theaters throughout New
York.

In 1971 he brought the
Yiddish-American theater
to Broadway with the pro-
duction of "The President's
Daughter," which he
directed and in which he
played.

13. After working for a
while in the garment
industry he went into vaude-
ville in 1908. In 1969 he was
cited by New York City as
-"first in the hearts of all
who love Yiddish theater."

NEW YORK—Mendel
Haber, an early activist in
Zionist programs who was
chairman of the board of M.
Haber Inc., diamond impor-
ters, died Oct. 12 at age 90.
He helped Jewish refu-
gees from Europe and was
honored by the Federation
of Jewish Philanthropies,
Weizmann Institute and the
Herzliah Hebrew Teachers
Institute.

Annette S. Marcus, a long
time social worker in the
Detroit area, died Oct. 18 at
age 64.
Mrs. Marcus was director
of social services at Good
Will Industries' League for
the Handicapped for 13'
years. She developed a
number of innovative pro-
grams, especially for the
blind, and developed a day-
care program for the chil-
dren of clients.
She served as a field
instructor for the schools of
social work at Wayne State
University and the Univer-
sity of Michigan.
Mrs. Marcus lived at
16010 Templar, Qr.,
Southfield.
She is survived by her
husband, Maurice, a son,
Dr. Richard of Laguna
Beach, Calif. ; a daughter,
Carol; a brother, Leonard
Share of Elizabeth, N.J. and
a sister, Mrs. Harry
