Detroiter Angered by 'Sham of a Memorial' at Babi Yar

Edith Jackier's anger
overcame her tears during
her recent visit to the Babi
Yar memorial in Russia, a
stop on the United Jewish
Appeal Women's Mission
agenda. Detroiters Marlene
Borman and Lauren Stone
were among the 97 partici-
pants in the mission.
"At Babi Yar I had mixed
feelings—mostly anger, not

grief," -Mrs. Jackier said.
She called the memorial a
sham since it is not built on
the site of the atrocity, but
across the street. No men-
tion of the slaughter of Jews
is made at the memorial,
however, the American vis-
itors left a placard at the
site reading, "Lest We
Forget."
Prior • to visiting the
memorial, the women were
supposed to attend Sukkot
services at the Kiev syna-
gogue. However, the Rus-
sians delayed the visit until
services were over hoping
the congregation would be
dispersed, Mrs. Jackier
said. The congregation
instead awaited their Amer-
ican visitors, - who
exchanged Stars of David,
mezuzot and chais on chains
in handshakes with their
Soviet counterparts.

Mrs. Jackier said mem-
bers of the congregation,
comprised mostly of older
men and women, were hop-
ing to receive prayerbooks,
which are illegal in Russia.

Viewpoints - and impres-
sions of things happening in
this age are subjected to po-
etry by David Anderson in
the collection titled "Lines
in Snow" (Vantage Press).
The subtitle "The Water-
gate Rag and Other
Poems" attests to the De-
troit poet's concerns with
life as well as with moods.
An Engligi instructor at
Wayne County Community
College, Anderson has re-
ceived recognition in many
quarters for his poetry.
Exemplary 'in his current
published collection "Lines
in Snow" is the title piece,
the longest in the book, con-
sisting of more than six'
pages which opens with
these stanzas as the first of
eight portions of the pole:
mical poem:

A propaganda piece, a po-

Jewish campaign was
obvious, Mrs. Jackier said.
She recalled that the city of
Kiev was "beautiful" bu't
the section which contained
many Jews and the syna-
gogue was dilapidated and -
rundown. She said when the
women were brought to the
synagogue, they were only
allowed 10 minutes to spend
with the Russian Jews,.,
while at the tourist shoe
they were accorded as
much time as they needed.
She said that no young
people were in sight, and
the presence of KGB secret
police was deeply felt by the
American delegation.
"It was a heartbreaking
kind of thing, she said,

referring to the Soviet res-
trictions on young people.
However, she was grateful
to make the visit. "We
wanted to let the Jews in
Kiev know we're with
them."
