Woodland of 5,000 trees,
through the Jewish National
Fund. The woodland will be
located in the American
Bicentennial National Park,
in 'a biblically historic
region in the Judean Hills,
southwest of Jerusalem.
The Friedmans have been
active in the community for
50 years. Their deep interest
in Yiddish educational and
cultural causes has linked
them to noted Yiddish
writers, educators and lec-
turers. On their 50th wed-
ding anniversary they
received greetings from
Chaim Grade, Yiddish poet
and novelist. They co-spon-
sored many theatrical func-
tions here and Mrs. Fried-
man appeared in a number
of Yiddish plays.
She was secretary of the
Sholem Aleichem Institute
and for three years was a
Yiddish language teacher.
She is a life member of the
Women of Jewish National

Fund and she and her hus-
band have been strong sup-
porters of JNF for many
years.
Mrs. Friedman has been
especially active in Jewish
book fairs at the Jewish
Center for 26 years and is a
leader in popularizing and
promoting Yiddish liter-
ature. She is a past presi-
dent of the Pioneer Women
and a member of the board
and is also a member of the
Music Study Club.

Friedman, a lifelong Zion-
ist, is national treasurer of
the Histadrut Annuity Fund.
He and Mrs. Friedman
made a $75,000 contribution
to Histadrut for the estab-
lishment of a youth center
at Ramle, Israel. Friedman
is a former Metropolitan
Division chairman of the
Allied Jewish Campaign and
has been a leader in cam-
paigns to aid Israel.
He is a past president of

Activities

George Bass, president of
the Downtown Synagogue,
was honored by the congre-
gation Oct. 9 on the occasion
of his 72nd birthday. Bass
has been president of the
congregation since 1964.
