The Best of Everything
AROUND 1889, Roma
Cafe on Riopelle at Erksine,
had the same name... but
was a combination restau-
rant, grocery store and
home.
No one knows what it was
before except that the build-
ing has been there since
1855.
In 1934, Morris, Paul and
Otto Soosi opened the doors
as new owners of Roma
Cafe for Detroit lovers of
Italian food...Then came
nephew Hector Sossi who
heads it today.
During prohibition, the
Roma was equally famous
for its spaghetti and its cav-
alier disregard of the Vol-
stead Act.
I It is said that big time pol-
iticos of that era enjoyed
the famous Roma hospi-
tality, but to keep their con-
sciences clear had the place
raided when they returned
to city hall.
So many years ago, Atlan-
tic Gardens Chinese restau-
rant on Linwood and Blaine
had a waiter named Frank
Wing... People like Marilyn
and Sid Frumkin (Atlantic
was their spot before being
married) followed him
wherever he went... Hoe
Hoe Inn on Third for 12
years ... and then to Roma,
where Frank has been the
past nine years.
When he first started at
Roma, Frank tells of being
so used to asking people
their wants at dessert time
his natural question was if
they' wanted fortune or
almond cookies.
Frank waited on us and
had what the Roma - menu
calls Veal Scalopini Al
Limone... thinly sliced veal
in - lemon butter and white
wine... It comes with slices
of lemon in between and
actually is more like veal
picante should be... Roma's
veal picante has no lemon
slices... Every order natu-
rally comes with spaghetti. .
too short, perhaps from
being overcooked, but still
very tasty if not rollable
around the fork tines.
Every , Monday and
Wednesday evening, Hector
has a strolling accordionist
and male songster going
about the tables entertain-
ing folks with romantic bal-
lads, Italian and otherwise.
This Was a Wednesday
night and Roma was doing a
big business... One of the
fascinations of- Roma Cafe
is its location... It is a real
challenge to the wayfaring
diner to find it after dark,
even after many years of
patronage.
people would just say, "The
corner of Riopelle and
Erskine at the northeast
corner of the Eastern Mar-
ket, across from the new
fire station."
Today, however, if you
can't find it, just ask any-
body in the neighbor-
hood...If they don't know
where Roma is, they've got
their shoes on the wrong
feet
and
clothes
on
backwards.
Roma has valet parking
and is closed Sundays.
IT'S DEFINITE about
four places changing hands
soon... Brunetti's on 12 Mile
and Northwestern... Star-
board Tack on Orchard
Lake Rd... Scotch 'n Sirloin
on Greenfield and James
Couzens... and Edjo's on
Woodward.
WORKING IN A retail
store and getting into dad's
restaurant-bar business is
like night and day... but 20-
year-old Steve Kopitz has -
made the transition with
ease at Marty Kopitz's Per-
fect Blend in the Fidelity
Bank Bldg. on Northwestern
and Evergreen.
He is now the clay man-
ager plus disc jockey on
Friday and Saturday nights
in between the live music at
PB ...But what amazes
Marty the most is how Steve
quickly has matured into a
natural restaurateur.
teaching waitresses, buying
(including wine), etc.
Perfect Blend's lunch
menu is -larger now than
many dinner menus around
town... Food is served from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., including
those home-made soups ,
people drive over to have.
Marty's long time friend,
