NEW YORK—The law in
New York state to protect
Jewish consumers from
vendors who sell non-kosher
mezuzot and tefilin took
effect Oct. 6, it was
announced by the Commis-
sion on Legislation of Agu-
dath Israel of America,
which had initiated the
measure. An • attorney,
Moshe (Marc) Newman,
has been named chairman
of the AIA Religious Arti-
cles Consumer Protection
Task Force which will mon-
itor the observance of the
law.
According to the new law,
every mezuza or pair of tefi-
lin sold in New York state
must have a packaging upon
which the name and address
of the manufacturer, or
importer of that religious
article is clearly set forth.
In the event that the mezuza
or tefilin fails to conform
with "Orthodox Jewish reli-
gious law", then the wrap-
ping must be clearly labeled
"non-kosher".
Milliken Unveils Synagogue Marker'
note that the congregation is
again growing, with young
families, even as the city of
Traverse City and the entire
northern part of Michigan is
also growing. This syna-
gogue can be a strong foun-
dation for a growing Jewish
community in northern
Michigan," Milliken said.
Also in attendance were
descendants of two of the
three original trustees of
Beth El: Devera Stocker of
Detroit, granddaughter of
Julius Steinberg, and Rich-
ard and Shen Smith of Elk
Rapids, great grandsons of
Salomon Yalomstein.
Last Sunday Cong. Beth
El of Traverse City dedica-
ted a state historical
marker commemorating
Beth El's synagogue, which
is the oldest building in
Michigan still used as a
Jewish house of worship, in
use since 1885.
The
ceremony was
attended by Gov. William
Milliken, who unveiled the
marker. In his remarks,
Milliken noted that at the
turn of the century, Beth El
served about 90 families,
but today the congregation
numbers about 25 families.
