Some of the many tiny
Jewish communities which
"dot the map" of the United
States have been sustained
in their struggle to stay
viable by cooperative pro-
grams with Jews at nearby
military bases. according to
a National Jewish Welfare
Board official. -
Mrs. Diana B. Coran.
director of the JWB
Women's Organizations'
Services. reported on the
development in a recent
issue of the_ JWB pub-
lication. the Circle. declar-
ing that "where Jewish
civilian and military corn-

makes for a richer, more
vibrant Jewish program."
Reporting on a recent sur-
vey of such programs. Mrs.
Coran said there was no
fixed pattern for such joint
efforts. In a few cases, she
reported. the two Jewish
groups have come together
to form a single community.
That is what happened
with the Ellsworth Air
Force Base in South
Dakota. which has a Jewish
population of between 20
and 25, and the Jewish popu-
lation of the same size in
Rapid City, 15 miles from
the base.
Together the small Jew-
ish groups have organized a
"Synagqgue of the Hills."
They hold bi-monthly serv-
ices at the base chapel. For
major holidays. they gather
either at the chapel or at
one of the homes of the
Rapid City Jews. The base
provides space for services.
some holiday foods and
funds for a visit by a rabbi.
Usually, a student rabbi is
hired for the High Holy
Days.
A somewhat different for-
mat is involved in the coop--,
erative effort between the
Jews at the Minot Air Force
Base and Minot's Conserva-
tive Temple Beth Israel in
North Dakota. There are
between 65 and 75 Jews in
each group. High Holy Day
services are conducted at
the synagogue with the Jew-
ish families on the base
attending. Sabbath evening
services are alternated bi-
-weekly between the syna-
gogue and the base chapel.
The Jewish women of Minot
take care of the oneg
Shabat.
The civilian and military
communities support an
active Bnai Brith chapter
and there is also an active
Hadassah chapter. Teen-
agers belong to the Minot
chapter of the Bnai Brith
Youth Organization, Mrs.
Coran said.

The number of Jews at
' the Dyess Air Force Base in
Texas is too few to support
a Jewish program there, but
those who want to take part
in Jewish activities do have
the opportunity. They join
with the 30 Jewish families
.in Abilene who belong to
Temple Mizpah.

What is even more impor-
tant. Mrs. Coran said. is
that members of the mili-
tary bases "lend their skills
- to enrich the Jewish life of
all those who take part. A
military officer serves as
- cantor and conducts Sab-
bath and holiday services."

35 Jews. There is a syna-
gogue in San Angelo but no

pate in holiday events and
services in the synagogue.
The civilian Jews fund the
activities and the Jewish
service personnel provide
the manpower.

They solved the problem
by moving their memorial
plaques to the fort chapel
and have since been partici-
pating in all Jewish reli-
gious activities at the base.
Members of the civilian
community contribute funds
and services to the chapel
program.

full-time Jewish chaplain is

For nearly 30 years every
effort to bring the Israeli

turned back.

ognition information kit has
been prepared. Free kits
