A native Detroiter, Sha-
pero was a chief pharma-
cist's mate in the U.S. Navy
during World War I. In 1918,
at the age of 26, he opened
his first store, the Econom-
ical Drug Store at Cass and
Ledyard. In 1931, when the
Economical chain num-
bered 43 stores, the corn-
pany merged with the 18-
store Cunningham chain.

Shapero's major philan-
thropies have been in the
field of education. In 1944 he -
added a war veterans'
scholarship program to the
32 scholarships already
available to Cunningham
employees interested in
attending Wayne University
or the Detroit Institute of
Technology. As a result he
was awarded honorary
degrees from Ferris
Institute (where he gradu-
ated in 1921) and the Uni-
versity of Detroit. which he
has served as trustee. He is
also a board member of the
Weizmann Institute and a
fellow of Brandeis
University.
Shapero. a past president
of Sinai Hospital and the
Cunningham Foundation.
gave $500,000 to build the
Shapero School of Nursing
at Sinai. He later proYided
the funds for an addition
which doubled the size of
the school. The pharmacy
building at Wayne State
University 'also bears the
Shapero name.
In 1965 the Jewish com-
munity named him the
recipient of the Fred M.
Butzel Memorial Award in
recognition of his out-
standing contributions.
Shapero has rendered
inumerable other services
to Detroit. He is former fire
commissioner. past presi-
dent of the Michigan State
Welfare Commission, direc-
tor of the Hundred Club
(which aids families of
deceased Detroit firemen
and policemen), and past
board member of the Boys
Club of Detroit and of the
Detroit Metropolitan Coun-
cil of -Boy Scouts of Amer-
ica. He is a former vice
president of the United
Foundation. Greater Detroit
Hospital Fund and Detroit
Symphony Orchestra.
During World War II he
was a "dollar-a-year" man
for the U.S. Treasury
Department, national chair-
man of the multiple stores
section for the sale of war
bonds. a member of the
board of the Detroit War
Chest and chairman of the
retail division of the Wayne
County war finance
committee.
For his work on behalf of
the city he was honored in a
1952 testimonial resolution.
Shapero has been married
to the former Ruth Bern-
stein for more than 53
years. The couple have two
children, Ray, who is presi-
dent and chairman of the
board of Cunningham's. and
Marianne. whose husband.
Alan E. Schwartz. is a past
president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation. The Sha-
per os have six
grandchildren.
