Zionist Federation Defended

Editor, The Jewish News:
In a letter to the editor of
the Jewish News - Sept. 23,
1977 Mr. Hymie Cutler
made serious accusations
regarding the activities of
the Detroit Zionist
Federation.
The Detroit Zionist Feder-
ation is an umbrella organi-
zation for all Zionist groups
and each of these groups
has different political, reli-
gious and secular views —
political ideologies from the
left to the right. Anyone who
wishes to politicize and
divide the Detroit Zionist
Federation will only serve
to weaken it.
A divided Zionist Feder-
ation will not help our
cause. As a Federation of
such diverse organizations
we would become involved
in endless discussions with
no finality and end up
destroying ourselves if we
continue the course which
Mr. Cutler has initiated.

Each political organiza-
tion has resources to docu-
ment its views for the public

by whatever means it
chooses. We take stands on
many issues supportive to
Israel but we must have a
consensus to take such a
stand as a federation.

It is regretable that Mr.
Cutler. knowing full well
that his motion was tabled
and not defeated, allowing it
to be brought up again for
rewording, had to resort to
the press rather than allow-
ing this matter to be settled
through more appropriate
means...that of the DZF
meetings.
Mr. Cutler knows that this
will never be solved through
weekly press releases. Face
to face dialogue is the only
peaceful means of resolu-
tion known to the free
world.

Editor, The Jewish News:
I am very disappointed
that you devoted so much
space in your last issue to
the story of two Orthodox
rabbis who visited the
Soviet Union, met with
Soviet appointed 'Jewish
leaders', and returned home
mouthing Soviet
propaganda.
I do know that last year
Vladimir Slepak stated,
`Only pressure from the
West', was responsible for
the release of Chernobilsky
and Ahs after their arrest
for participating in demon-
strations shortly after Sim-
hat Torah. Hardly a week

passes without me receiving
a communication from the
Soviet Union pleading for
Western pressure to help
save Anatoly Sharansky.
I would like to ask the
rabbis just two questions:
Without pressure from the
West do they really believe
that Soviet officials would
have allowed any Jews to
leave for Israel and do they
really believe that the
Soviet government could
possibly inflict more pain
and suffering on these brave
people?

Au.ssies to Hold Hearings
on Plight of Soviet Jewry

MELBOURNE (JTA)—
An Australian parlia-
mentary committee's plan
to hold hearings on the
status of Soviet Jewry has
drawn accusations from the
Soviet Union of interference
in its domestic affairs.
The Joint Parliamentary
Foreign Affairs and Defense
Committee will start its
inquiry in Canberra on Oct.
7 with evidence from
emigre Soviet physicist
Prof. Alexander Voronel.
who will come to Australia
from Israel for the
hearings.
Meanwhile, a new assault

on Zionism by a Soviet
"expert" has set off a wave
of anti-Semitic and anti-
Zionist attacks in the Soviet
press and news media, it
was reported by the Greater
New York Conference on
Soviet Jewry.

The basis for this was the
recent publication of a book.
"Wild Wormwood," which
equates Zionism with Naz-
ism. The book, written by
T.S. Solodar, was widely
reviewed within the Sort
Union this summer and /-
hailed for exposing fife
"true cornerstone of Zionist
ideology and propaganda."

Dayan Met Hassan, Hussein?

NEW YORK — Time
magazine this week claimed
that Israel Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan detoured to
Morocco on his way to the
U.S., to receive a message
from Saudi Arabia delivered
by Morocco's King Hassan
II.
According to Time, the
message said that if nego-
tiations for a Middle East
peace broke down and war
resulted, Egypt would have _
to seek russian military aid
and this would threaten
Anwar Sadat's government.
Also, Egypt would con-
sider interim talks if Gen-
eva negotiations failed.
Although this is opposed by
Syria, the Saudis support
interim talks. The third
point reportedly in the mes-
sage was that the Arabs are
gravely concerned about

ANKERS the

new settlements on the West
Bank.

Time also said that Dayan
met secretly with King Hus-
sein of Jordan last month.

Hussein repeated a long-
standing promise, according
to Time : Jordan will open
an embassy in Israel if
Israel pulls out from the
West Bank;- Jordan will sign
a partial agreement if
Israel returns an "eight-to-
ten mile strip along the Jor-
dan River."
Time said that the alter-
native, according to Hus-
sein, was for Israel to deal
with the PLO.

Congress Action on Nazis Sought

Editor, The Jewish News:
There is now in Congress
a bill, H.R. 412, introduced
by Congresswoman Holtz-
man along with other spon-
sors, which would make
participation in Nazi war
crimes grounds for deporta-
tion from the United States.
The Justice Department
is now preparing to move
against a number of alleged
Nazis and their collabora-
tors, most of Eastern
European background (Mai-
kovskis, Detlays,
Kaminskas, and 11 others),
and press litigation against
them on the basis of having
lied on their applications for
entry to the U.S. Even if
found deportable, there is a

question if any action will
be taken unless H.R. 412
(along with other compaion
bills: H.R. 409, 410, etc.) are
passed. ,
It is very important that
your readers and many
members of the metropol-
itan community write to
President Carter, Attorney
General Bell, and to their
Congressmen and Senators
urging them to approve
H.R. 412 and pass it. Nazi
criminals and their murder-
ous collaborators must not
be allowed to enjoy the
comforts and security of liv-
ing in the United States.
