Efficient. accommodating waitress Amy Compton brought us a good-sized dish of spaghetti with our choice of a tasty sauce of mush- rooms, green peppers and tomato base (there are six sauces to choose from)... tossed salad and fresh home-baked garlic bread...The spaghetti was not soggy or dry which are major complaints in many places that serve it...Ira has a special machine that freshly cooks the spaghetti to order in 15 seconds. Frieda and Scott both had lasagna...and enjoyed their hard-to-please palates when it comes to this dish. Of course, with an old old pro like Jimmy Ranucci in the kitchen, you can hardly go wrong...He's been mak- ing Italian specialities prac- tically all his life. Pleasant young hard- trying waitresses do their best to please, and folks who bear with the inexperience of these gals find very appreciative faces. None of us had des- sert...but get this...With din- ner during the special, folks can have that three-scoop ice cream boat for just 50 cents. About the salad we had...of the choice dressing. our selection was something quite different...called Ranch Dressing...with feta cheese, sour cream and but- termilk...It was very good. Mama Zelda's has to rank as one of Michigan's top family restaurants from a cost standpoint... The prices are incredibly low and the food is quite good...Considering what it costs nowadays to cook at home, a place like Mama Zelda's is like something sent from Heaven for budget watchers. But this isn't the only rea- son to go to Mama Zelda's...as attested by a couple of fellows we saw who could buy restaurants galore, plus a couple of TV personalities and some fine folks who like to eat out. Ira's place seems to have something for everybody in a clean atmosphere where the only thing you pay for is good wholesome food. LIKE AFRICAN vio- lets?...Ask Bob Watkins. counter man at Sutton Deli-- about them...He grows the rare species at his St. Clair Shores apartment... Bob's other hobby is collecting dolls (not the real ones)... he has over 250 of them. Sutton Deli, Lahser and Nine, will be open for a buf- fet lunch every Sunday starting Oct. 9... Owner Sandy Markovitz says it'll be one of the biggest brunch values in Michigan...with "everything under the sun" on it. EVERYBODY'S favorite. popular Kay Mazer, former counter head at Darbys. is the new manager at Bagel Deli. Maple at Farmington Rd. THE POSSIBILITY is alive that Hy's Steakhouse of Chicago and Toronto may come to Windsor. SPAGHETTI COMPANY opens its second local spot first week in October...It'll be in the Wonderland Cen- ter. Middlebelt. south of Plymouth Rd.. Livonia...Ben Kasle and Ted Richman's original locale is on Woodward at 11 1/2 Mile. FACTS ABOUT spa- ghetti...distributed by Spa- ghetti Company...with its source being the National Macaroni Institute: "Spaghetti is one of a family of foods known by the generic term. "maca- roni," which also includes macaroni. macaroni prod- ucts and egg noodles. All come in a variety of shapes and sizes but spaghetti is most often seen in the solid rod form. "The best quality spa- ghetti is made from a mix- ture of semolina and water. Semolina, the heart of duram wheat, is a granular substance which is amber in color and about as fine as sugar. Duram. the hardest wheat known to man. is grown principally in North and South Dakota. Min- nesota and Montana. "The art of spaghetti making is so old that its exact origin in unknown. Its creation is usually credited to the Chinese who recorded the eating of various forms of macaroni products as early as 5000 B.C.E. "One of the most popular legends concerning the introduction of spaghetti to the Western World goes back to the expeditions of Marco Polo to the Orient. As the story goes, a Chinese maiden was lured from her breadmaking by her lover, a member of the Polo crew.
