The Best of Everything

IT'S DIMLY-LIT outside
and hard to find...The only
sign you see is Aliette's
Bakery painted on the win-
dow at Porter and 24th, an
old Latin American neigh-
borhood near downtown
Detroit.
But inside is a tiny French
restaurant with about 24
seats that you enter through
an arch from the bakery
where a few tables for over-
flow "crowds" are usually
filled.
In fact, going to Aliette's
without a reservation is
quite ridiculous because
owners Aliette and Corville
Benson have no place to put
you...even if your plea was
a drive in from Kokomo.
If you're looking for
atmosphere, Aliette's
doesn't have it...No table-
cloths either, just paper
doilies, very small kitchen
and the prices are not
cheap.
But if you want some good
food. Aliette's has it...The
menu is a small black board
hung on the wall—that's it.

There

However, Corville comes
to the table and patiently
tells what Aliette and the

Lunch is a
whole new experience.

We've turned over a new leaf at lunch. From our .new casual
decor featuring dozens of green, growing plants. To a,
delectable new menu ... featuring just what you've always
wanted for lunch. Like sandwiches made from succulent
prime rib. Fluffy omelettes ... your choice from a combination
of flavors. Or a light, satisfying combination of homemade
soup and a salad you build yourself
from our bountiful bar. •

others are cooking in the
kitchen...plus her regular
special dishes.
We were almost turned
off upon arriving late for
our 9:30 reservations after
almost a half-hour trying to
find the place...Corville
pulled a watch out of his
pocket and said, "This is a
funny 9:30."
The evening experience
turned out to be worth the
trip, though...We had a
cream of watercress soup
that was thick but with a
delicate rich flavor... Next a
piece of quiche and mari-
nated tomato with mush-
rooms... Our duck aux
huitres was short on the
meat but delicious where
there was some...What can
we say about the sauce
except that it was truly ele-
gant...Not having had much
duck to eat, we thoroughly
enjoyed doing as the French
do...dipping our French
bread in the sauce and soak-
ing it into tantalizing deli-
ciousness... Too bad_
Aliette's doesn't have this
by itself on the menu.
Helping Aliette in the
small kitchen were old
friends Marie and Michele
Bertin, of the Le Bourdeaux
on Livernois. now living in
Florida... The four lovely
French people are
related... and Marie and
Michele are looking to
return here again.
Make no mistake about
it... Aliette's is tiny and
offers no high-falutin atmos-
phere...The food is good
though and made fresh to
order.
Above all, don't go with-
out a reserva-
tion... remember, there's
only 24 or so places in the
little dining room to seat
you.
AT NORTHGATE Delica-
tessen, Greenfield and 10
Mile, waitress Yetta Laxer
mentioned to counter man
George Waldman that she
was going to visit a cousin
in Wheeling, W. Va....
George asked the person's
name...and it turned out
that he had been there four
years ago for a Bar Mit-
zva... Yetta and George
have spent years working
together... and never knew
they were cousins.
STUART MITCHELL,
songster-guitarist at the
Raven Gallery, Greenfield
and 12 Mile, through Sun-
day, is a country-western
song writer, too...like a tune
he wrote about a trucker
who is reminded of a lost
love whenever he smells
onions.
WE HAD A preview of
what is this week's dinner
special (until a week from
Sunday) at Mama Zelda's

ping Plaza, and can't see
how Ira Levy can do it for
$1.59 with the Jewish News
