Conscience of America Expresses Outrage Over Terrorist Lies About Israel
Truth has no value for the propagandists who advocate Israel's destruction.
Therefore, the Arab-oriented American Palestine Committee, headed by Norman F.
Dacey, saw fit to dig up an old incident, involving the unfortunate attack by Israelis on
the American vessel, the USS Liberty, in 1967, as a way of accusing Israel Foreign Min-
ister Moshe Dayan of having deliberately ordered that attack. The facts had been
reviewed numerous times. It was established that the tragedy was the result of an error.
Israel having apologized and compensated the families of the naval crew who died in the
attack. But the resurrection of that occurrence was utilized by the haters of Israel to
publish an advertisement headed "Are We Welcoming the Murderer of Our Sons?" as a
way of undermining the Dayan mission to the United States.
But the conscience of America is not lulled into inactivity by such inhuman demonstra-
tions of hatred for a people struggling to survive against all odds stemming from Arabs
and their American cohorts like the American Palestine Committee whose chief aim is
the destruction of Israel. A number of America's most prominent citizens, non-Jews as
well as Jews, appealed to the American people to "Remember", by publishing this decla-
ration in the New York Times on Sept. 21:
Remember.
Murder screamed 11 times at Munich on September 5th. 1972.
The Killers were the P.L.O.
And we shall not forget.
The Killed were Israeli Athletes.
And we shall not forget Moshe Weinberg, Yosef Gutfreund,
Yaacov Springer, Amitzou Shapira, Joseph Romano,
David Berger, Mark Slavin, Eliezer Halfin,
Zeev Friedman, Kehat Schorr, Andre Spitzer.
Fathers, sons, brothers.
All dead.
It has been five years, but we shall not forget.
How can we forget the other innocent victims?
Jewish, Christian, Moslem, killed at other places1Sy the P.L.O.
in their war against civilians.
26 Christian Pilgrims at Lod Airport.
24 children at Maalot.
47 persons on a Swissair Jet.
8 adults and 8 children at Kiriat Shemona.
And more and more and more links in a
brutal chain of murder and massacre.

These names speak for themselves. They are an indication that wool can not be pulled
over the eyes of Americans who search for truth.
Why, therefore, are so many. especially in the media. misled by the type of propaganda
that spells mass murder and instigation to another Holocaust? Why could not a John
Carsin first check on facts before addressing Mike Wallace-with a question that implied
acceptance of the charges about Dayan's "guilt" in the USS Liberty matter? Why didn't
Mike Wallace have the proper. knowledgeable reply ?
The answer is that there are shortcomings. that even among the best known peonle in
the communications media there is a readiness to submit to rumor. without being bound
by the fact that there are two sides to every question as a means of arriving at truth.
The need is to strive for truth. Never submit to terror and strive for facts. rejecting the
terror that threatens Israel. the Middle East and the entire world ! Let the message of
"Remember!" serve as a guide never to submit to the lie that would destroy an innocent
people that is determined to live.
And we shall not forget
that the P.L.O. killers go unpunished by the world.
And we shall not forget that the P.L.O. would if it could destroy
the State of Israel as it is destroying the State of Lebanon.
We believe Israel will talk, sacrifice; and negotiate
with those who recognize
the need to talk, sacrifice, and negotiate.
SAUL BELLOW
BAYARD RUSTIN
But we shall not forget that the P.L.O. says Israel has no right to exist.
Would any state in the world be asked to talk
to those who say you must die at the end of the conversation?
Israel waits for Peace.
And an end to the killing.
But while we wait, we shall not, we cannot,
we must not forget.
So, remember Munich, 1972,
Lest we re-live Munich, 1938.
The significance of this statement is in this impressive list of names of noted Ameri-
cans of all faiths apended tolhis advertisement which was sponsored by the Writers and
A Simhat Torah Quip
Simhat Torah provides so much joy for young and old
that it retains the glory of one of the most cheering of Jew-
ish festivals.
Because of the role of the Jew, always under pressure
from threatening outside forces, the tribulations are never
overlooked.
This is what becomes apparent in the famous adaptation
by Simeon Frug, translated from the Yiddish by Helena
Frank:
Simhas Torah! Skip and hop
On your feet till down you drop!
In your mouth a merry jest
And a burden in your breast !
This old song, adapted by one of the greatest of the Yidd-
ish writers of the early part of this century, remains a
guideline for the ages.
CBS Overlooks Holocaust
CBS Reminiscences, a reconstruction of 50 years' news
and entertainment experiences, was an excellent three-hour
BEVERLY SILLS
radio presentation. It recalled many events, including Hit-
ler and World War II. How could it possibly have ignored
the most tragic event in all history—the Holocaust?
How could the program have overlooked the rebirth of
Israel after 2,000 years of Jewish exile?
Only a passing reference was m ade to Buchenwald.,
After World War I, Lord Robert Cecil, reviewing the
aftermath of a global conflict, remarked that one of the
most important results of that bloody war was the issuance
of the Balfour Declaration calling for the redemption of
Zion. After World War II Zion was truly redeemed and re-
established. How could such a vital occurrence in history
have been forgotten?
Walter Cronkite, who narrated the program. and those
who prepared it may not be blamed for prejudice in respect
both to the Holocaust and Israel's rebirth, but they cer-
tainly showed poor judgement in such forgetfulness.
Easy Marks for Bigots
Anything that smacks of liberalism or calls for changes in
social structures often encourages the venomous to search
for scapegoats.

The Equal Rights Amendment is an example of the read-
iness with which haters create targets for attack.
The John Birch Society, the Ku Klux Klan and their
cohorts have joined in attacking the ERA. Naturally, the
find in the Equal Rights Amendment the Jewish bogey. It's
so easy for them to link a Jew with something they hate.
By their hate, these movements make it easy to locate
the haters among us.
A Tribute to Helen DeRoy
Helen; DeRoy earned all the tributes that were , expressed
in appreciation of her philanthropic role in this community.
She was unstinting in giving. The auditoriums named in
her honor in Jewish Community"Center buildings, the fre-
quent evidences of her interests in social welfare. music
and cultural advancement, gave respect to her name..
Her late husband, Commodore Aaron DeRoy, had set the
pace for communal devotions. He had served as chairman
of one of the early Allied Jewish Campaigns and his widow
pursued the tasks he had begun, adding many more to the
glorious record of her aid to deserving causes. What she
had done continues as a lasting memorial genuinely
accorded and deservedly attained.
