Katsh, Gen. Horev to Address the Annual Technion Dinner

the Albert Einstein Award
to the dinner honoree, Philip
SlomoVitz, and will inaugu-
rate the establishment of
the Philip Slomovitz Profes-
sorial Chair for the Hebrew
Language at the Technion
as a tribute to the honoree's
lifetime association with the
movement supporting the
Technion.
David Pollack, chairinan
of the annual Detroit Tech-
nion Society dinner to be
held at Cong. Shaarey,
Zedek on Oct. 10, and Louise
Milgrom, president of the
Detroit chapter of the
American Technion Society,
announce that the guest
speakers will be Gen. Amos
Horev, president of the
Technion—Israel Institute
of Technology, Haifa, and
Prof. Abraham Katsh, pres-

best known as having made
major contributions to
strengthening Israel's secu-
rity through the application
of scientific and tech-
nological programs.
A graduate of MIT, his
last military post was as
chief scientist of the Israel
Ministry of Defense. He has
also served as chairman of
the Israel government's
committee on manpower
requirements for engineer-
ing industries.
Dr. Abraham Katsh; pres-
ident emeritus of Dropsie
University, is an out-
standing authority on
Israel's educational needs
and the emphasis on the
scientific.
Many of his Hebrew
works have been published
in Israel and he has worked
closely with Israeli author-
ities as historian, Hebraist,
Hebrew studies in his honor.
In 1956. Dr. Katsh visited -
the Soviet Union. 'Poland
and Hungary. and arranged
for the microfilming of sev-
eral thousand manuscripts
and rare documents of
Judaica and Hebraica. This
was the first and only suc-
cessful cultural undertaking
dealing with Hebraica and
Judaica by a Western
scholar which until then had
been unavailable to Western
scholars.

now housed at Dropsie
Uriiversity.
He is the author of more
than 20 books and 300 arti-
cles, among them the his-
toric "Ginze Mishna" based
on 149 Geniza fragments
from the Ninth-12th C,en-
turies.

DR. ABRAHAM KATSH
archivist and head of sev-
eral delegations on cultural
matters to Israel.
Dr. Katsh holds three
degrees from New York
University. He also was a
graduate scholarship stu-
dent at the Islamic Institute
of Princeton University. In
1944, he received the degree
of Doctor of Philosophy
from the Dropsie College
for Hebrew and Cognate
Learning. He also has six
honorary degrees.
Dr. Katsh joined the New
York University faculty as
an instructor in 1933. at
which time he introduced
the first course in modern
Hebrew to be taught at an
American university. He
left NYU in 1967 to \assume
the presidency of Dropsie.
At New York University,
he founded the Jewish Cul-
ture Foundation (1937),
established the NYU
Library of Judaica and
Hebraica (1942). and
directed from 1947-1967 the
American Israel Student
and Professorial Workshop
in Israel. 4.
Dr. Katsh served New
' York University as lecturer,
professor of Hebrew culture
and education. professor of
Hebrew and Near Eastern
studies. distinguished pro-
fessor of research, and
director of the Institute of
Hebrew Studies. The New
York University Board of
Trustees honored Dr. Katsh
in 1957, by creating "The
Abraham I. Katsh Profes-
sorshiP of Hebrew Culture
and Education."
In 1965. New York Univer-
sity also established a fel-
lowship in the field of
