Carmel Wines Symbol Defined

NEW YORK—The symbol
of the Israelites carrying
huge cluster of grapes on a
branch between them is
shown on every bottle of
Carmel wines of Israel.
Many do not know the
meaning behind this
symbol.
Y. Levinberg, general
manager of Carmel Wines,
Inc., in North America. said
this symbol represents a
biblical episode important
in the history of Israelites.
The biblical story comes
from the book of Numbers,
Verse 13. when the Israel-
ites, encamped in their
search for a new land, long
for the end of their quest.
The Bible syas:

Apology Given
for Insulting Joke

A joke characterized as
"insulting to Jewish listen-
ers" was told during a half-
tinie radio interview during
the University of Michigan-
Duke University football
game last Saturday.
Announcer Bob Ufer later
apologized for the joke told
by one-time coaching aide
and U-M fan Wally Weber
and reportedly will not use
Weber again as a half-time
guest. Weber has appeared
on the half-time shows
approximately once a , year
for many years.

`Send men to spy out the
land of Canaan, which I give
to the people of Israel.'
Moses selected a team of
two men from each of the
Israel tribes, send them
forth to search the sur-
rounding lands and report
back. On their return, one of
the teams came back from
a fruitful valley, carrying
with them 'a branch with a
single cluster of grapes, and
they carried it on a pole
between the two of them."'
This was the most fruitful
of the lands surveyed. and
the land was called the Val-
ley of Eschol, which means
cluster. The cluster of
grapes has since been the
symbol for the wines of
Israel.

The old address for

inadvertantly used in an
advertisement that
appeared in the Sept. 9 issue
of The Jewish News.
Selma's Yarn Shop is

Farmer Jack Super-

the "Retailer. of the Year

The award was presented
in competition with food
chains throughout the

just "frosting on the cake."
