Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was a member of the first Board of Governors rof the Hebrew University. A search committee is now engaged in finding a suitable incumbent for the Freud Chair. Leaders of the local and regional Freud Chair com- mittees from around the world were hosted at a luncheon by President Harman. Smog...Cough! Rife in Tel Aviv TEL AVIV The air of Tel. Aviv is generally polluted beyond the permissable limit that was established a few years ago. Early morn- ing photographs of Tel Aviv show a thick, gray cloud of smog covering the entire city, with only the tips of tallest buildings rising above above it. The dangers and implica- tions of this situation are being studied by the Research Institute for Envi- ronmental Health, Nui- sances, a joint project of Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine and the Ministry of Health, which has brought them to public attention through media publicity and conferences in which doctors. ecologists, meteorologists, chemists. engineers and others participated. Pollution has come to Tel Aviv rather suddenly follow- ing the enormous increase in the number of motor ve- hicles during the past 20 years. This is the city's pri- mary cause of air pollution. although one power station with a low chimney is also a major contributor to the problem. Tel Aviv University Prof.Alexander Donagi, head of the Research- Institute for Environmental Health Nuisances, claims that the laws governing pol- lution control, which were enacted in 1961, have been completely outdated by changed conditions, and that only new laws will pro- vide a basis for dealing with the problem. JERUSALEM—Sigmund Freud's own dream of a chair in psychoanalysis at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem became a reality in August. In the presence of some 2,000 delegates to the 30th International Psycho- analytic Congress (IPAC), the Sigmund Freud Chair in Psychoanalysis was for- mally dedicated by Hebrew University President Avra-' ham Hartnan. The Chair's inaugural lec- ture was provided by Dr. Anna Freud, and read by a colleague in her absence.
