The invitation was sub- mitted to Begin Aug. 31 in Jerusalem by British Ambassador John Mason. Lord Fisher of Camden. president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Jews, said it was "excel- lent" that the invitation had been extended by Callaghan. "I have not the slightest doubt that the two men will get on extremely well and that their meeting will lead to a long. friendly and pro- ductive association. in the course of which much of the misunderstandings which arise from time to time will surely disappear." he said. The Israeli Premier could be assured of "the most cor- dial and friendly welcome from the Jewish community in which the Board of Depu- ties will play its part," he added. Similar feelings were expressed by Sidney Ship- ton, general secretary of the Zionist Federation (ZF), who regretted, however, that Britain had trailed behind the United States, Romania and France in ex- tending an invitation to Begin. Although no date has yet been announced for the visit, communal leaders are interested in the uncon- firmed report that it may be at the end of October since it would coincide with a° flurry of pro-Zionist activity. Callaghan will himself address the Board of Depu- ties on Oct. 23 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Bal- four Declaration. The ZF will mark the same event on Nov. 2. 2. the actual anniver- sary, with a dinner to be addressed by other leaders of the main British political parties. It is also hoped to have a leading Israeli at the dinner, but no decision has yet been made. The following week, Abba Eban, the former Israeli Foreign Minister, will be the guest speaker at the ZF's biennial conference. Begin Will Address Christian Peace Congress in Jerusalem JERUSALEM—Israel Prime Minister Menahem Begin will address the Inter- national Congress for the Peace of Jerusalem at the end of January. According to the confer- ence organizers, Begin's fre- quent biblical pro- nouncements and his ex- pressed faith in the prophet- ic utterances of the hebrew prophets will make an atten- tive audience of the 1,000 or more evangelicals from the United States and the entire Western world who will as- semble in the Embassy Au- ditorium of the Diplomat Hotel in Jerusalem for a mass expression of deep Christian concern for Is- rael's right to exist under a just and durable peace. Delegates will travel en- masse to the nearby hills of Judea to participate in a tree-planting service, and to Masada for a stirring cer- emony. It is/ anticipated that very positive projects will stem from the Peace Congress, projects which will be a con- tinuing fulfillment of delegates' feelings of bib...- al ties with the Jewish people restored in the Land of Promise. Resolutions are expected to be adopted at the close of the Peace Con- gress which will urge the Christian world to rally sup- port for the cause of Israel. Christian speakers will in- clude Dr. Arnold T. Olson, of Minneapolis. past presi- dent of the National Associ- ation of Evangelicals, and Rev. Chuck Smith. a staunch friend of Israel and pastor of Calvary Chapel. in Costa Mesa, Calif. Tours are being arranged to include the Congress. Zionist Head Almogi Says Aliya Best Way to Help Israel IS COMING sooty Northwestern Highway at Inkster Road Leasing Agent RON LICHT 24001 Southfield Road Southfield, Michigan 569-2580 JERUSALEM (JTA)—In a Rosh Hashana message to world Jewry, World Zionist Organization Executive chairman Yosef Almogi called for aliya as "the best and most fruitful way to exercise influence" on the ongoing development of Israeli society. "Nobody would claim that Israel is free from defect," Almogi wrote. But "Zionists can and should exert an influence on the shape of an Israeli society—press for the elimination of abuses, strive towards the full achievement of social jus- tice and the embodiment of fundamental Jewish values in that society. "The best and most fruit- ful way to exercise that influence is through a large- scale voluntary aliya from the free world. That respon- sibility must not be evaded by the Zionist movement." Reviewing prospects for the year ahead, Almogi stated: "In view of the financial power and politi- cal influence of the Arab world, Israel more than ever depends upon both the financial and moral support of world Jewry, not only to ensure Israel's security and continued development, but to foster an understanding of the true objectives of Zionism and to prevent the erosion of general public sympathy for the Jewish state throughout the enlight- ened world. "Second only to the prob- lem of Israel's security— and ultimately having asig- nificant bearing upon it —is the problem of assimilation in the free world. The Zion- ist movement will have failed in one of its primary responsibilities if it cannot stimulate Jewish commu- nities everywhere to pro- vide a really adequate Jew- ish education for their youth."
