schools opened for the 1976-
77 year.
Three elementary day
schools under Conservative -
auspices also were opened
this month in the United
States, bringing to 50 the
number of day schools affil-
iated with the Solomon
Schechter Day School Asso-
ciation, according to Chan-
och Shudofsky, day school
coordinator for the United
Synagogue Commission on
Jewish Education.
The 13 new Orthodox-
sponsored schools—six ele-
mentary and seven high—
brought to 511 the number
of such day schools in the
two countries-458 in the
United States and 53 in Can-
ada—according to a joint re-
port by Samuel Feuerstein,
president, and Dr. Joseph
Kaminetsky, director, of
the National Society for
Hebrew Day Schools.
Shudofsky said the total
of Solomon Schechter ele-
mentary schools was now
46, nursery through eighth
grade, and four high
schools, grades nine

Jewish Educators
Coalition Formed

NEW YORK—A grass-
roots organization of Jewish
educators, the Coalition for
Alternatives in Jewish Edu-
cation, has been formed.
The Coalition for Alterna-
tives in Jewish Education
has been Mandated to for-
malize a national Jewish
educational_ resource cen-
ter.
Additionally, - the resolu-
tion forming the coalition
authorized the newly-elect-
ed 'natiorial board to exe-
cute a number of programs
and activities. Among -them
are the convening of region-
al conferences of Jewish
educators; promoting re-
search and development;
aiding in the facilitating of
teachers' resource centers,
and to act as an in-
stitutional advocate for the
concerns of Jewish teach-
ers.

through 12. He told the Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency
that total enrollment in the
Conservative-sponsored day
schools had been 9,030 dur-
ing the 1976-77 school year
but that enrollment figures
for the new school year
would not be available until
officials of the affiliated
schools reported enrollment
later: this year.
He said the three new
Solomon Schechter schools
are the Herzl Schools in
Los Angeles; the Hillel
Academy of the North
Shore in Swampscott,
Mass. ; and the Flatlands
branch of the Bialik School
in Brooklyn.
Rabbi Bernard Gold-
enberg, Torah Umesorah di-
rector of school organiza-
tion, told the JTA it was ex-
pected that when precise
figures were available,
total enrollment in the 511
Orthodox schools would be
in the area of 93,000, rough-
ly 1,000 more than during
the past school year.
Rabbi Goldenberg noted
that 12 of the 13 new
schools were established
outside of New York City
and only one in the city
area, a reflection of the
city's no-growth Jewish pop-
ulation situation. He said
the 458 schools in some 170
communities in 36 states in-

is one who makes the same
mistake twice without get
ting nervous."
—Jane Hear(

cluded 307 elementary
schools and 154 high
schools.
He said the new elemen-
tary Hebrew schools were
established in Fort Worth
and El Paso, in Texas; Des
Moines, Iowa; ► St. Paul;
Phoenix, Ariz. and Brook-
lyn. He said the high
schools were started in
Miami Beach; Belmar,
N.J. ; Santa Clara and San
Francisco, Calif.; Worces-
ter, Mass.; Monsey, N.Y.
and Montreal. He said the
Montreal high school will
serve a French-speaking
Sephardic population.
