RICHARD PERGAMENT AND FAMILY Southfield extend best wishes to all their relatives and friends for a healthy and happy New Year By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1977, JTA. Inc.) A variety of reasons have been offered for the prac- tice of blowing the shofar on Rosh Hashana. Basi- cally, Rosh Hashana is char- acterized in the Bible as a "day of blowing" (Numbers 29:1). Rav Saadia Gaon gave 10 reasons for blowing the shofar. One reason is that blowing the shofar ac- knowledges that we believe in the fact that the Al- mighty is king over all the universe. Just as the arriv- al of a king is heralded by blowing trumpets to an- nounce the presence of the Almighty with the sound of the shofar. This indicates to us that there is authority in this world and that when we act without authority we transgress. A second reason is that the shofar is a call to repen- tance. It is a reminder to us that we have obligations and have been remiss in keeping them. A third rea- son is that the shofar was the instrument blown at Sinai during the Revelation that took place there: It thus reminds us of the base of our obligations. A fourth reason is that the shofar reminds us of the prophets whose inspired messages came to us like a blast of the shofar. This re- minds us•of the continuous communication that exists between the Almighty and man. It also teaches us that the lack of communication is responsible for a strain in the relationship between the human and-the Divine. A fifth reason explains the broken notes as so.unds which symbolize the broken MR. & MRS. This stimulates us to pray for its reconstitu- tion. It may also represent the broken lives of sinners and our prayer for mending those lives. A sixth reason relates the blowing of the shofar on a ram's horn as symbolizing the ram that Abraham used as a substitute for his son Isaac at the altar. It thus re- 1minds the Almighty of the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son and of Isaac's willingness to be sacrificed—deeds whose vir- tues are used in order to so- licit the mercy of the Al- mighty in our own judg- ement. A seventh reason con- tends that the shofar repre- sents the broken hearts of the worshippers signifying the sense of humility with which we must approach the Almighty. An eighth rea- son advances the belief that the shofar injects a mood of serious thought and in- trospection. A ninth reason looks upon the shofar as a symbol of hope for the future because the era of the grand return of the Jewish people to a fully constituted Holy Land and Temple in Israel is to be heralded by a blast from the shofar. A 10th reason, in this same vein of thinking, as- serts that the shofar is blown because the coming resurrection of the dead will be heralded by the notes of the shofar. Sin has often been compared to death and forgiveness has been likened to resurrec- tion. Others have commented that the shofar's sound iS a most primitive and basic one. This teaches us to re- ject the superficial coloring which taints men's souls and return to the basic un- derstanding of one's heart. It reawakens one's in- nermost feelings of honesty. Some have maintained that the mysterious sound of the shofar gives us the feeling that somewhere there is someone who cares and who is accessible. i.e.. the Almighty.
