Bar-Ilan U. President Dr. Emanuel Rackman Surveys
Religious Influence in University's Progress and Growth

Responding to an enthu-
siastic welcome given him
here by the university's sup-
porters upon his assump-
tion of the presidency of
Bar-Ilan University of Is-
rael, Dr. Emanuel Rack-
man told of the progress
made and the influence of
religion in the university's
progress.
Pointing out that less
than half the enrolled stu-
dents start their studies
with religious orientations,
Dr. Rackman said, in his
speech Sept. 8 at the annual
meeting of Detroit Friends
of Bar-Ilan University at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, that
the end result is strong iden-
tification and great devo-
tion to learning and to Is-
rael.
"No one can graduate
from Bar-Ilan who is Jew-
ishly ignorant," Dr. Rack-
man stated.

Expressing appreciation
for the pioneering efforts
by the Detroit Jewish com-
munity in the establishment
of Bar-Ilan University, Dr.
Rackman said that without
the efforts of the Stollmans
and the Nusbaums the uni-
versity might never have
come into being being. He
spoke of Phillip, Frieda and
Max Stoliman as great crea-
tive leaders who had en-
rolled an entire community
as pioneers in a great Is-
rael cultural undertaking,

dress by Mrs. Jerome L.

man of the Bar-Ilan Board
of Overseers, added to the
interpretive addresses of
the evening regarding the
university. Mrs. Stern
quoted from an address by
a girl student who escaped
from Iraq. It told of the re-
strictions in the land she
