Some historians believe
that Rosh Hashana was
first celebrated in the au-
tumn, and was later shifted
to the first day of Nisan,

corresponding to the vernal
equinox. The date was
shifted again to the first of
Tishri in post-biblical
times.

The Best of Everything

(Continued from Page 29)

And. of course. there's
host par excellence. A
Cimarelli. whose illuminat
ing personality blends in
with the glittering decor o
Topinka's Country House ..
Al is one of the best maitre
d'-hosts around.
Joan Whitfield was ou
latest good waitress at To
pinka's Country House ..
She works only Fridays and
Saturdays because of anoth
er job ... but is a perfect ex
ample of how a waitress
should smile .... Joan
brought us the delicious To
pinka's Country House
Turtle Soup laced with
Sherry, and another fine
piece -of prime rib.
Matt Michaels' eight-
piece orchestra played to
an overflow crowd enjoyirig
a wonderful evening of
good food, excellent service
and festive music of yeste-
ryears and standards .,. His
Latin-American tunes will
have more oomph when he
gets some accompaniments
like maracas, etc...Sax
man Chuck Feger on vocals
does a beautiful job on the
romantic ballads ... Would
be even better with the
drummer using brushes. be-
hind him ... The band does
a most commendable job
when it plays.

some Rigagnato (lamb
braized in olive oil and sau-
teed onions, with lemon and
oregano) ... spinach pie ...
moussaka ... pastitsio
Vegetables Briam (okra,
eggplant. squash. tomatoes,
onions and celery-boiled,
then sauteed in a fry pan
and baked).
One of the best 'salads
we've eaten in a long time
is Yassoo's Horyatiko. or vil-
lage salad .... with cucum-
bers, feta cheese, tomatoes.
onions, peppers, beets, rad-
ishes. olives and artichokes,
mixed in olive oil and vine-
gar ... There is no lettuce'
as in. a Greek salad.
For a glamorous encore,
Nancy made us her fanious
drink, "Nancy's Yassoo Spe-
cial" ... Greek coffee laced
with Kahlua, topped with
whipped cream and a
cherry ... Not the slightest
bitter taste and at the end,
it even tasted a tiny bit like
hot chocolate.
Pete has a couple. of fine
gents to assist him ... Matt
Vocino, his right-hand
young man ... and Bill Al,*
cini, personable, well-liked
night manager. •
Appearing at the piano

Appointment Raises Eyebrows

TEL AVIV (JTA)- —
Some Israeli circles ex-
pressed surprise Monday at,
Premier Menahem Begin's
appointment of Amihai Pag-
lin. a former Irgun com-
rade-in-arms. rather than a
professional military man
as his special advisor on
combatting terrorism. The
post was previously held by
Gen. Rehavain Zeevi, who
resigned last May.
Paglin, in his early 50's,
'served as operation officer
of the Irgun Zvai Leumi-
the underground fighting
group commanded by Begin
before the end of the 'Brit-
ish Mandate 30 years ago.
He has lived in obscurity
since then as . the operator
of a family metals work-
shop. near Tel Aviv.
Paglin was in the news
briefly in 1972 after his ar-
rest oh suspition of corn- .

plicity in an attempt by the
Jewish Defense League to
smuggle arms from Israel
to the U.S. and Europe for
a war on Arab terrorists.
Paglin was arraigned,
pleaded not guilty but was
never tried.
Observers were disturbed
by the fact they the
counter-terrorist advisor is
not a member of the armed
forces and has no expe-
rience with new weapons
systems and new fighting
methods.

Prayer has been an endur-
ing and universal phenome-
non of human life, not be-
cause of a priesthood or-
dained it,nor because tradi-
tion hallowed it, but
because man is ever seek-
ing to probe into his own
depths and bring to light
his hidden yearnings.

WHEN. YASSOO GREEK

Village first opened on
Woodward. just south of 14
Mile, it was a try-and-get-in
situation ... and offered
much competition to Greek-
town on Monroe ... with
folks discovering it unneces-
sary to go doirntown when
they could get the same
and better right within min-
.utes on their side of town.
After awhile, 'things ta-
pered off quite a bit, and it
just wasn't like it used to
be.
However, a recent visit
there has made a re-believ-
er out of us ... Yassoo has
come back to how it was at
the beginning.
Ted James, original chef
there has returned ... as
well as Pete Peponis, gener-
al manager ... and things
are beginning to happen
again ... for the better.

The food at Yassoo has re-
turned to give downtown
Greektown even more com-
petition ... And the service,
with people like personal-
ity-plus Nancy Shook wait-
ing on tables, is with snapp-
ing efficiency ... She has
every fine attribute a really
good waitress can possess
... great smile, wonderful
personality and tremendous
ability to please.

In order to see if Yassoo
was really for real again,
we decided to try a little of
a lot of things ... Fassoul-
ada (bean soup with garden
vegetables and a tomato
base). Kasseri (cheese
flamed. with brandy and
lemon juice, which we
spread on fresh Greek
bread) ... appetizer plate of
Skordalia (sauce made with
garlic and potato), Sageki
(yogurt with spices and cu-
cumbers), Tarama (fish
roe), marinated octopus
and Melitzansalta (fried
eggplant salad) ... Then
