Blanchard Praised Editor, The Jewish News: I wish to thank Congress- man James Blanchard for his efforts on behalf of the Karolis Kanopa family of Vilnius. Lithuania. who were recently granted per- mission to emigrate to Is- rael after five years of peti- tioning the Soviet govern- ment with no response. Rep. Blanchard wrote to the State Department, there- by placing the previously unknown family on the list wishing to emigrate, and also the Soviet Embassy on the Kanopas' behalf. ARNOLD GOLDIN ANn SONS Of the various names by which the New Year holi- day is referred to in the Bible, the term Rosh Hash- ana is the one most rarely used. It appears only once (Ezekiel 40:1). We need volunteers just as George Washington needed them back in 1776. Volunteers who expect nothing but the satisfaction of serving a great cause. Men and women with spirit and compassion...to fight a foe that has killed more Americans than all the wars in our history. We need you...to help us in the fight against cancer. When you give your time and your effort to your local ACS Unit, you are making an investment that pays divi- dends in the saving of lives. Your nearest Unit is -anx- ious to hear from you. INN MI MI- *exterior only The PLO Reminder of Munich Anniversary Again Underscored Editor. The Jewish News: The statement of the PLO Central Council pledging a "continuation' . of the so called "armed struggle" and rejecting Security Coun- cil Resolution 242 comes al- most five years to the day after the brutal murder of Israel's athletes at the Mu- - nich Olympic Games. They have been five years in which little has changed. International terror against civilians has not ceased. The determination of the Jewish people to fight it and to stand firm against all designs for the erasure of their sovereign and independent existence has not diminished. The massacre at Munich in which the Arab world cast a dark shadow over the ancient spirit of the Olympic tradition was not. however. a single act of mindless brutalization. As part of a planned and syste- matic campaign to bring a country to its knees it was only one link in a long chain of genocidal acts—the killing of 47 innocents in the Swissair disaster, the mur- der of 26 pilgrims at Lod Airport. the gunning down - of 24 children at Maalot- more than a thousand acts. Not only as a land and not only as a territory has Palestine been precious to the Jewish heart. but chiefly as the birthplace of Judaism, the home of the great molders of his faith and the land from which is- sued forth God's law and God's truth. —Israel Bettan The lurid light of the torch which the PLO lit at Munich has not been quenched. Rather has it grown in intensity, rather has it become a blinding and clearly focused ray of hatred and evil design. Today the impact of that design has taken on a new and added force. We see it not only in the cruel acts of terror perpetrated. but in the arrogance with which at- tempted meditation is re- jected as "American and Zi- onist intrigue." We see it in the perverted use of terms which bestow a form of satanic legality: "Rights" "Homeland" "Re- turn' . "Occupied Pales- tine." The Arab world. long daz- zled by the mesmeric powers of its own language has now discovered the power of the word in West- ern Civilization. The emo- tive terminology designed to produce the sympathetic reaction has now become the new weapon of Arab in- tentions. The one statement laying down elements of a Middle East settlement which still stands firm before this on- slaught, and which has been generally accepted by all the states party to the conflict is. of course, Secu- rity Council Resolution 242. This resolution stands in di- rect contradiction to all that the PLO holds dear to its bloody cause. It acknowl- edges the Jewish right to sovereignty and political in- dependence, and the right of all states in the area to live at peace within secure and recognized boundaries. The statement of the Cen- tral Council of Aug. 26 reaff- irms PLO rejection of Secu- rit . v Council Resolution 242 and rejects any attempt "aimed at liquidating the resolutions of the Palestine National Council, – the themes and programs of which are enshrined in the 15-point program of March 1977 and the notorious Pales- tine National Covenant. These infamous documents remain the "telltale heart" of the organization. Defying Israel's basic right to self-determination and statehood and seeking to "purge the Zionist pres- ence from Palestine" by a continuation of the armed struggle." Hardly was the ink dry on the document when pow- erful explosions rocked Je- rusalem, Jaffa Gate and the Arab market of Gaza se- riously injuring an Arab youth. Another 12 people were injured when a bomb blew up a bus in Afula. the 50th such incident this year. Both in word and in deed the ideology of the PLO is utterly irreconcilable with Security Council Resolution 242. Neither indeed, is the existence of this bloody band reconcilable with the vision of a new Middle East, at peace with itself and with the world. The legacy of Israel's lost sportsmen whom we re- member this week must not be a continuing world pas- sivity in the face of the out- rage which the continued ex- istence their murders repre- sents. Israel will never forget the Munich Olympics. The PLO gives her cause to keep the memory alive. Nahum Shamir Consul General of Israel, Chicago Southfield Housing, Recall Editor, The Jewish News: Mrs. Ida Snider's letter of Aug. 26 covers up some very_ vital facts as regards the Southfield Council and their activities with regard to senior citizen and low in- come housing and the re- call. It was not opposition to senior citizen housing which created the furor! There is a crying need for many far- reaching programs de- signed to fit the needs of the elderly, and every in- telligent. thinking individ- ual knows the need is great. But low-income housing designed for families with children to be built in close _proximity to McDonnel Towers I and II is not the answer. • • • • DISCOUNT- OPTICAL Doctor's prescriptions filled Prescriptions duplicated from your glasses Thousands of frames you can try on yourself - 19.90 includes clear glass, Bifocals, tints, plastic lenses, photogray, impact resistant, single designer frames - vision lenses and a wide • All our quality glasses at super low prices selection of frames. It is unthinkable to mix such disparate age groups, each with different needs. This blend has been re- jected by Sterling Heights, Livonia, and Bloomfield, to name a few. Many well- known authorities in this field have advised against it. - Mrs. Snider or her ghost writer neglects to mention that the Southfield Council, without any input from its citizens had put together this unfortunate plan. The Southfield _Planning Corn- mission turned down the proposal. When it was. however. presented to Council for zon- ing, the Council advised an overflowing audience. that the only item for discussion was zoning—that was the subject—nothing else! Protest from the audience was met with icy stares and nothing anyone had to say made the least differ- ence. Council was asked re- peatedly to place the item on a referendum to the people. but Council refused. It is naive of Mrs. Snider to assume that the recall is solely a low-income housing protest. The many Jewish and non-Jewish people who signed those recall petitions did so because they are fed up with the machinations of the Southfield Council. Many of these same people voted the present council into office and are now exercising their per- ogatives by signing the re- call. Is it racist to protest the ill-advised plans pushed by council with such vehe- mence and force in the face of protest by black and white, Jew and Gentile? Maynard M. Feldman William Hertz
