limited income who require
a supportive environment
but not the total care of a
geriatric institution.
All families recognize the
need to inculcate a sense of
culture and belonging in
children and youth, and our
Federation family is no ex-
ception. We support Jewish
educaiton in a formal sense
through the United Hebrew
_Schools and Midrasha,
through the area's three
Jewish day schools and
through Hillel Foundations
on three Michigan campus-
es.
But schools are not the
only way to foster a sense
of Jewish identity. Our

munity Center in West

range of recreational, so-

mai and educational serv-
ices for the whole family in
an informal Jewish setting.
Plans are now being made
for a remodeled Health
Club and new racquetball
courts in an effort to keep
pace with demand.
The Fresh a Air Society's

programs also help give
children a clear sense of
Jewish community in addi-
tion to a wholesome coun-
try vacation. Camp Tama-
rack enrollments this sum-
mer were the highest in re-
cent years. To its many
exciting programs, Tama-
rack this year added a teen
trip- to England and a coop-
erative farming project at
the Ortonville camp.

The newest members of
our community, recently ar-
rived from the Soviet
Union, continue to bring
forth the finest response
from our agencies, coordi-
nated by Resettlement Serv-
ice.
And sophisticated facil-
ities in the treatment of can-
cer and cardiac patients
contributed to the growing
renown of Sinai Hospital as
a major medical complex.
Our sense of family ex-
tends far beyond the limits
of metropolitan Detroit. As
always, our contributions to
the United Jewish Appeal
helped support health and
welfare institutions in Is-
rael and anywhere needy
Jews require our assist-
ance. When an earthquake
struck Bucharest, Romania,
destroying several syna-
gogues and many 'Jewish
homes, the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee responded

• with immediate aid for the
quake victims.

With Israel going through
a period of great stress,
both internally and exter-
nally, and with mounting
isolation in an oil-conscious
Western World, it is all the
more important that we, as
Jews, remain her "family".
Jewish needs do not change

with the politic-al tides. Jew-
ish children still need food
and schooling, Jewish sick
still need medical care,
Jewish aged still need atten-
tion to their daily require-
' ments, Jewish immigrants
still need to be absorbed.

-
Detroiters know this, and
they respond. This year,

our community raised
$16,550,000 for the Allied
Jewish Campaign - Israel
Emergency Fund.

In - this Rosh Hashana sea-
son of reflection and recorn-
mitment, I would like to
leave you with this thought:
We are a community with
heart. That is our strength.

Rosalynn and I extend Warmest greetings to our
fellow Americans of the Jewish Faith on the._
occasion of your High Holy Days, in which sym-
bolically "mankind passes in judgment before the
heavenly throne".

.

As you solemnly review and judge your own conduct
during the past year, we are all reminded_ that we
serve God most faithfully by showing concern for
our friends and neighbors.

In a world made small by modern technology, all
peoples and nations have become closer together,
and the concern for others has become more im-
portant than ever. This is the wellspring of our
nation's commitment to human rights, and it is why
we are determined that all of America's words and
deeds will honor that commitment.

Among the Rosh Hashonah prayers recited in the
synagogue is one which looks toward the day when
mankind will be joined in universal brotherhood.
This is a prayer to which all of us add our heartfelt
Amen as we wish each of you a happy and prosperous
New Year.
