a new American group, the
Zionist Academic Council
(ZAC). ended with its 30
participants. faculty mem-
bers from colleges across
the United States. all feel-
ing that they had been pre-
sented with unadorned.
straight-from-the-shoulder
impressions of Israel's prob-
lems.
The mission organizers.
officials of the American Zi-
onist Federation in New
York and of the World Zion-
ist Organization head office
in Jerusalem. evidently
went to such extents to en-
sure that none of the mis-
sion members felt they
were being exposed to a
"snow job" that some mem-
bers. at least. felt there had
been too much of the nega-
tive. the critical. the divi-
sive. in the presentations
the mission heard.
But by and large there
was recognition that the
mission had sought to and
succeeded in involving its

Other highlights of the
mission included a day de-
voted to studying the Is-
raeli-Arab situation. with a
visit to the village of Baka
el-Garbiya and talks with Is-
raeli experts and with neigh-
boring kibutzniks as well as
with village leaders.

Adjusting oneself to Brit-
ish humor and writing, the
reader will find Bermant's
book entertaining. It is
educational, of sorts, ' for
therein are contrasted two
lifestyles much different
than that experienced in the
U.S.
The book is full' of con-
trasts. The very proper gen-
tleman Henry Hoch, who
with his wife Celeste form
the central characters, is
contrasted with his alcohol-
ic brother Matthew, who at
a late age commits adul-
tery with Henry's American
neighbor. Henry's sister
Gwendoline, the epitome of
propriety, shocks the fam-
ily when, after years of
spinsterhood—although she
has had offers from the
most cultured gentlemen—
she marries Humphry, the
Hochs' gardener, whom the
author describes as "a
squat, swarthy Moroccan
with one eye, a blue chin
and -a neck like a tree-
trunk. "
A light critique on what
the new olim face upon
making aliya, Bermant's
"The Squire of Bor Sha-
chor," makes for an enter-
taining evening of light
