There are few home cere-
monies connected with
Rosh Hashana, but it is a
tradition to dip apples in
honey and offer the prayer.
"May it be thy will, 0
Lord, to grant us a happy
and sweet year."

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Sour or bitter foods are
avoided on Rosh Hashana
and for a mystical reason
nuts are not eaten (the nu-
mericl value of the Hebr-
ew word for nut. egoz, is
the same as the word for
sin. het).

the Bulletin we have pub-
lished since November 1959.
Our funds include a build-
ing fund, a library fund, a
mitzva fund, and contribu-
tions in observance of joy-
ous and sad occasions are
received, not only from
members, but from non-
members and military fami-
lies as well. We also contin-
ue to get contributions from
those who have long left An-
chorage. They have a deep
attachment to this small
community and have not
forgotten us. Last year, we
started a rabbi fund, and
are now in the process of
defining our long range
goals and the role we hope
to play in the future.
On occasion groups of
Christian children visit the
temple and are told about
Judaism and our religious
objects. Some of us have
spoken on Judaism at Chris-
tian churches. The Jewish
and Christian communities
have supported UJA for
many years. Our finest ef-
fort took place after the
1973 Yom Kippur War when
$40,000 was raised, state
wide, for Israel.

Cong. Beth Sholom has
come a long way since it
was formally organized in
October 1958. There were 36
of us-16 families and four
single members. The char-
ter members who still live
here continue to be mem-
bers. In 1965, after the dev-
astating 1964 earthquake,
with 39 people-15 families
and nine single members—
we built our six room
temple. Today we have 121
people-57 families and 19
single members. We have
no paid staff. Everything is
done by the members on a
volunteer basis.
Out of a local population
of around 200,000 people
there are an estimated 500
to 600 Jews. That figure is
continually rising and the
newcomers are joining the
congregation.
The few Jewish families
who maintain kosher homes
send to Seattle, as they
have been doing since 1958,
for their meat and other
items. Passover supplies
and other products, though,
are available here.
We are still the only con-
gregation in Alaska and af-
filiated with the Reform
movement on Jan. 15, 1960.
Our members, however,
are Reform, Conservative
and Orthodox. The only rab-
