TEL AVIV (JTA)—Ex-
pectations of high syna-
gogue
attendance,
in-
tensified
security
pre-
cautions and a soaring
price index mark Israel's
preparations for the High
Holiday season. Attendance
at synagogues has been ris-
ing since the Yom Kippur
War and the number of wor-
shippers this year will be in-
creased by the influx of
tourists.
The main synagogues are
installing more seats, collec-

ting more prayer books and
engaging more readers.
Some schools are being con-
verted to ad hoc syna-
gogues and most hotels will
have their own minyanim
and are trying to hire prom-
inent cantors to attract
guests.
Soldiers, police and bor-
der police have been
alerted against possible ter-
rorist incursions. Beefed up
civil guards will patrol the
streets of all cities and
towns during the holidays.
The rabbis of Tel Aviv have
given permission for armed
guards to participate in
services. Chief Rabbi
Shlomo Goren has invited
the civil guard commander
Benner Raz, to deliver a
sermon from his pulpit on
the importance of the civil
guard.
Only the Ultra-Orthodox
have refused to permit
armed guards at their serv-
ices. They say that if it was
necessary to carry arms,
their learned sages would
have told them so.

To an extent unequalled
among other sections of hu-
manity, Jews have been in-
terested in books... (The
Jew) copied books. Hi
owned books. He patronized
literature. He was inter-
ested in intellectural life
and...movements. Even in
the most soul-destroying pe-
riod of oppression, it might
be assumed that almost
every ghetto Jew, however
humble his circumstances
and however lowly his call-
ing, was likely to have his
modest library. A book was
not to him, as to his neigh-
bor, an object of vener-
ation, of mystery, of dis-
trust. It was a sheer neces-
sity of everyday life.

JERUSALEM (ZINS)—A
poll, conducted by Haifa Uni-
versity shows 60 percent of
Israel's Arabs (not living in
the administered terri-
tories) favor Israel return-
ing to the 1947 boundaries.
Some 75 percent favor the
establishment of a separate
Palestinian state.
