THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
wish all their family and friends
a happy, healthy New Year
By IiENRIETFE BOAS
During the past year, the
apprehension and trial of
Dutch nationals accused of
collaborating with the Nazis
in war crimes were major
news items. The most sensa-
tional case is that of Pieter
Menten, the 77-year-old mil-
lionaire art dealer accused
of the murders of several
hundred Jews and non-Jews
while an SS officer in the
Lemberg region of Poland
in the summer of 1941.
Another sensation was
caused by the trial of Jo-
hannes Loyen, 58, who was
a concentration camp
guard at Brobuisk, White
Russia, where Polish Jews
were incarcerated. Loyen's
Nazi past was undetected
for 30 years during which
he lived obscurely in. Hol-
land as a factory worker.
The District Court at Roer-
mond sentenced him to life
imprisonment. He appealed
the sentence on grounds
that the court was not com-
petent to try him as his
Dutch citizenship had been
revoked because of mem-
bership in the SS. But later
Loyen withdrew his appeal.
Had it been successful, he
might have been extradited
to Israel for trial.

JERUSALEM—A new
center of learning, com-
plete with an open school
for young adults, has been
founded in Jerusalem.
Called Shefa, the center re-
flects in the meaning of its
name the abundance of Jew-
ish life that forms the basis
for the principles behind
the organization. Those prin-
ciples are predicated on the
persuasive beliefs of Rabbi
Adin Steinsaltz, an accept-
ed and respected member
of the Israeli Orthodox com-
munity.
The rabbi, a sabra now in
his 40s, who only became re-
ligious at the relatively ripe
age of 13, says he is con-
vinced that the Jewish
people, and Israel, need not
be like any other nation. He
is against the cosmopolitan-
ism of today's world—at
leak where that type of uni-
versality tends to make cul-
tures too similar, resulting
in a loss of ethnic and reli-
gious identity.
"We must go back to our
Jewish roots and our own
sources," he- proclaims. He
emphasizes. however, that
such a reversal does not
mean a ghetto isolation.
Rabbi Steinsaltz actually
takes another course—one
that is perhaps strange to
some ultra-religious prac-
titioners, but one that he is
sure is in keeping with the
biblical advice to "...re-
spect the wise of all na-
tions." His direction simply
warns modern Jews that in
order to understand the
values others have to offer,
they must first be armed
with a thorough awareness -
of their own sources and
roots.
Just how, then, does
Shefa seek to help modern,
secular, often highly edu-
cated Jews immerse them-
selves in aspects of their
own tradition ? First there
is the new learning center
itself. Both the open school
for younger students, and
the Institute for Advanced
Jewish Studies help _ ease
the pathways to acquiring
knowledge.
Then there is the new
quarterly English-language
publication, also called
Shef a.
Rabbi Steinsaltz and his
staff are engaged in con-
ducting classes and semi-
nars in such subjects as
Jewish philosphy, mystic-
ism, Bible, Talmud, music
and art. Their aim, and the
underlying current of their
instruction, is to impart
knowledge to Jews who al-
ready have all the tools of
higher education, but who
decidedly lack Jewish
knowledge. and even Jew-
ish identity.
According to editor Jona-
thon Omer-Man, who was a
former editor of the Jewish
Encyclopedia Year Book,
the quarterly will serve as
the main vehicle for course
announcements and news
about the organization.
Omer-Man also explains
that Shefa has established a
publishing house for Hebr-
ew and English books, and
intends to turn out titles per-
taining to contemporary
Jewish • subjects.
