Kahn, a short five years
ago a complete unknown,
on the screen is today one
of the busiest comediennes.
She just finished two new
films, 20th Century Fox's
"High Anxiety" in which
she appears opposite "psy-
chiatrist" Mel Brooks as
the delightfully kooky Vic-
toria Brisbane; and at Co-
lumbia where she portrays
a mysterious-stranger oppo-
site Peter Falk in "The
Cheap Detective," Neil
Simon's answer to "Casab-
lanca."
The young lady combines
grace and talent as an ac-
tress with a rare operatic
voice and an uncanny gift
for parody.
Movie goers saw her first
in a short film, "The
Dove," an hilarious parody
on Ingmar Bergman's work.
But she really came to the
attention of the screen au-
dience with her grotesquely
funny characterization of
the jilted fiancee in Peter
Bogdonovitch's "What's Up
Doc!" in which she is
edged out in the favors of
Ryan O'Neal by the tem-
pestuous Barbra Striesand.
For her performance in
"Paper Moon," she won an
Academy Award nomi-
nation.
In "Blazing Saddles,"
Madeline did a riotous im-
personation of Marlene
Dietrich singing the song,
"I'm Tired." It literally
stopped the show and crit-
ics and public alike were
conquered. For the second
year in succession, she was
nominated for an Oscar as
best supporting actress in
"Blazing Saddles," also net-
ting the Award of the Acad-
emy of Humor for the first
year of its instigation.

Exposed Tzizit

BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.)

Some religious Jews
wear their tzizit in such a
way that they are ex-
posed to view all the time.
The basis for this practice
is the biblical command-
ment in the Book of Num-
bers which states that
"you shall see them."
This verse is interpreted
to mean that these
fringes (i.e. the tzizit)
shall always be visible.
The purpose of having
them visible is the con-
tent of the remainder of.
the above verse "so that
ye shall remember ..."
Obviously the visibility
of the tzizit is supposed to
be a constant reminder to
the Jew to be aware of his
responsibilities to the
Almighty in the form of
the commandments of the
faith and also in the form
of gratitude for the Al-
mighty's saving acts
which redeemed the Jew
from many misfortunes
such as the slavery in
Egypt.
Those observant Jews
who do not wear the tzizit
constantly exposed claim
that this condition is
satisfied and fulfilled by
the process of looking at
them while putting on the
garment which has the
tzizit.

Frankenstein"
"Young
saw her in the contrasting
role of the excessively ele-
gant fiancee of Gene Wilder
who only lifted her voice in
song when she thrilled to
the monster's embrace.
In constant demand in all
areas of the entertainment
field, the versatile Madeline
Kahn won rave reviews in
"Boom Boom Room," the
Joseph Papp production at
Manhattan's Lincoln Center
Theater, winning for her
)erformance a Tony nomi-
naiton and the Drama Desk
Award.
Subsequently, she starred
in Gene Wilder's madcap
comedy, "The Adventure of-
Sherlock Holmes' Smarter
Brother," with Wilder him-
self and British comedian
Marty Feldman leading the
male contingent.

to do with their parts. Only
the late John Garfield and
Anna Revere (three years
before their appearance be-
fore the House Unamerican
Activities Committee) ren-
der humanly warm portray-
als.
Sam Jaffe, as Prof. Lie-
berman, unfortunately, had
to express. the -opinions of
Miss Hobson, which surely
were not his own.

Of the various names by
which the New Year holi-
day is referred to in the
Bible, the term Rosh Hash-
ana is the one most rarely
used. It appears only once
(Ezekiel 40:1).

Sam Jaffe, the 81-year-
young actor who made his
acting debut in 1915, has
been signed by actor-direc-
tor Burt Reynolds to join
the all-star cast of "The
End," a screen comedy-
drama produced by Law-
rence Gordon for United
Artists.
The veteran performer
who starred in the TV doc-
tor series, "Ben Casey,"
this time plays for a change
a hospital patient. Others in
the cast include Joanne
Woodward, Sally Field,
David Steinberg, Carl Rei-
ner and Myrna Loy.
Earlier in his stage ca-
reer. Jaffe appeared in
many New York produc-
tions such as "Samson and
Delilah," "The God of
Vengeance," "The Jazz
Singer" and "Grand
Hotel."
On the screen, he re-
mains unforgotten by us as
the insane Russian Czar op-
posite Marlene Dietrich in
"The Scarlet Empress," as
the wise old Lama in "Lost
Horizon" and the dapper
safecracker in "The As-
phalt Jungle." Most recent-
ly, he portrayed a cameo
role in the monumental tele-
vision epic "QB VII."

Agree-
"Gentlemen's
ment" was screened by the
Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences within
their 1977 summer retro-
spective series of Oscar-
winning films. Written for
the screen 30 years ago by
Moss Hart from the novel
by Laura Z. Hobson, it was
the first picture to deal
with upper-class anti-Semi-
tism in the aftermath of
World War II.
Today, the filmic treat-
ment seems antiquated and
unrealistic.
As I said in reviewing the
film 30 years ago, Miss Hob-
son had no concept of our
roots and heritage when
talking only about the Hebr-
ew faith, denying that there
was such a thing as a Jew-
ish people.
Gregory Peck, Dorothy_
McGuire and Celeste Holm
certainly didn't know what
