GOLDIN Small Swiss Jewish Community Seen Active, Unhampered by Peers By TAMAR LEVY (Copyright 1977. JTA; Inc.) GENEVA—There are on- ly 21,000 Jews in Switzer- land out of a population of 6,440,000. But they form an active community, alert to local problerns and deeply interested in Jewish over- seas affairs, especially the well-being of Israel. Switzer- land, after all,. is the coun- try where the Zionist move- ment was founded by Theod- or Herzl in the famed Basel Casino where the first World Zionist Congress con- vened in 1897. There are some 3,300 Jews in Geneva and while they form a cohesive com- munity, they also reflect the diversity of Jewish life. There is the Sephardic com- munity, the liberal commu- nity and the Orthodox com- munity, the latter of Hun- garian origin. Until recently there was a small English-speaking Jewish community compos- ed of about a dozen fami- lies from Anglo-Saxon coun- tries who worked for vari- ous international organiza- tions or business concerns. But most of them have left as a result of the economic recession and the decline of the dollar relative to the Swiss franc. The Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, em- bracing 24 communities BEST WISHES TO THE COMMUNITY • EDW. C. LEVY CO. LEVY FAMILY with a total membership of about 20,000, held its annual general meeting in Lau- sanne. The subjects on the agenda were, with one ex- ception, indicative of inter- ests and concerns of Jews throughout the free world. These included the plight of Jews in the Soviet Union and Syria and assimilation among the younger gener- ation. The exception was Swit- zerland's 85-year-old law barring ritual slaughter, which the Jewish commu- nity has tried in vain to have rescinded. Even Jews who are not observant re- gard the law as a measure of discrimination against re- ligious minorities—Moslems as well as Jews—who live in Switzerland and a breach of freedom of religion. The bill was originally adppted in 1892 under pres- sure from anti-Semitic ele- ments. Those who favor it, notably the League Against Cruelty to Animals, claim that ritual slaughter is in- humane. Despite Jewish ef- forts, the Swiss Parliament recently voted 23-8 against modifying the law. The Swiss, generally, take a favorable view to- ward Israel. Earlier this year the six ministers who comprise the government of the Canton of Zurich, vis- ited Israel for a week's study tour. The group was headed by Alfred Mosdorf, Prime Minister of the Zur- ich Canton, who is also pres- ident of the Swiss-Israeli Friendship Association. It was the first time that the ministers visited any for- eign country as a group and their trip was interpreted as agesture of great friend- ship •4or Israel. In another event, mem- bers of the Swiss govern- ment joined the Israeli Am- bassador, Yaakov Shimoni and local Jews at ceremo- nies in Basel marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish Na- tional Fund. Swiss newspapers were alarmed when the elections in Israel last May 17 re- sulted in a victory for Men- ahem Begin's Likud Party. The Tribune de Geneve wrote that the new alliance between Likud and the reli- gious parties posed a threat to Israel's democracy and the growing influence of re- ligious elements in Israel ran counter to the world trend toward liberalization. Other papers predicted that the new government would be uncompromising in its foreign polity and reac- tionary in domestic policy. The reaction in the Jew- ish community was similar and some influential Jewish leaders threatened to stop their contributions to Is- rael. But both the press and Some historians believe that Rosh Hashana was. first celebrated in the au- tumn, and was later shifted to the first day of Nisan, corresponding to the vernal equinox. The date was shifted again to the first of Tishri in post-biblical times. the Jewish community changed their opinions after Begin's meetings with Presi- dent Carter July 19-20. They saw the new Israeli leader not as a former terrorist but as a clever politician who, at least in his first month in office, made no mistakes. The Swiss were impressed by the fact that Begin retained most of the civil servants of the former Labor-led government and appointed Moshe Dayan as foreign minister. That step was very favorably accept- ed here. The Swiss press com- mented extensively on the Carter-Begin meetings which they viewed as cru- cial to U.S.-Israeli relations and to a Middle East peace. el' qfs Frida Se tember 9 19 MRS.
