ALJLICAL
NEW YORK (JTA)—Ari
Chaney traveled several
thousand miles from Peters-
burg, Alaska, to New York
to celebrate his Bar Mitzva
not only because there is no
synagogue in Petersburg
but also there are no Jews
there except he and his
mother, according to Rabbi
Mark Goodman of Manhat-
tan's _Central Synagogue.'°
Ari became Bar Mitzva
at Central Synagogue on
Sept. 3. He had been study-
ing this past year with
Rabbi Goodman and Cantor
Richard Botton, via tapes
and letters sent to .Peters-
burg. With the help of his
New York-bornmother,
Mrs. Barbara Chaney. he
mastered the Hebrew texts
and prayers required for
the ceremony, Rabbi Good-
man said.
Petersburg, a fishing vil-
lage of 2,000 residents, most-
ly Norwegian fishermen's
families, is on a small is-
land near the Alaskan
coast. Mrs. Chaney, believ-
ed to be a divorcee, is a
teacher in the town school
system.

PHILADELPHIA -- Eze-
kiel Leikin, former execu-
tive director of the Mich-
igan region of the Zionist
Organization of America be-
fore becoming director of
the Philadelphia region and
the Mid-Atlantic district,
will be honored at a Sept.

delphia.
Leikin is being cited for
"his dedicated and distin-
guished service on behalf of
the ZOA and the state of Is-
rael spanning more than
three decades."
•When the boy decided he
wanted to be Bar Mitzva,
he and his mother visited
Central Synagogue more
than a year ago to make ar-
rangements. In addition to
the Hebrew preparation,
the boy was assigned Eng-
lish readings in Judaism to
prepare for his Bar Mitzva.
Rabbi Goodman said he
understood that as a young
girl, Mrs. Chaney received
a good Jewish education.
He said he did not know
why Mrs. Chaney and her
son chose the 131-year-old
Reform synagogue.
