$700 Million UJA Goal Is Set

JERUSALEM (JTA )-
Responding to Premier
Menahem Begin's challenge
that American Jewry cele-
brate 30 years of partner-
ship with Israel by creating
a special effort to overcome
social problems, the United
Jewish Appeal Prime Min-
ister's Mission pledged
$23.2 million more for the
1978 drive—a 25 percent in-
crease.
"How can the Jewish
people live with social in-
justice?" Begin asked the
300 community leaders of
this largest ever leadership
mission. "Poverty in our
midst is intolerable at a
time when we must be
strong. -
Leonard R. Strelitz, UJA
general chairman, an-
swered that American
Jewry would respond gener-
ously with strength as he an-
nounced a $700 million cam-
paign goal for 1978.
In a dramatic farewell
dinner in the Knesset last
Thursday, at the conclusion
of the four-day mission,
Begin called American
Jewry the greatest asset to
the people of Israel. He
stressed the need to help
solve the severe housing
problems affecting 45,000
immigrant families in Is-
rael.
